We are showing this weekend and noticed yesterday when I was doing our pre-show "tart up" process, that my 17 year old mare's nearside udder was swollen. It wasn't swollen last weekend when I bathed her and haven't noticed it all week. It's not hot, hard or leaking anything and I regularly clean her udder as my mare loves me peeling off all the crud that accumulates on them (we show every weekend) and falls asleep!

I bathed her today and it's still swollen but again, no pain and she fell asleep when I was cleaning them. She is schooling well and with no lameness. She has never had this in the 4 1/2 years I've had her.

As far as I know, she has never had a foal but I have my suspicions she may have had one early on in her life. She is good health, up to date on vaccinations and worming, can't see any cuts or anything on her udder BUT she is heavily in season and is squibbing everywhere. Probably more than any other year as my friend's horse has moved onto my yard and they have ALWAYS had a thing for each other.

One of my friends said that she didn't think it was mastitis as there was no pain or heat. I wondering if it's a hormonal thing with her this year as she hasn't parted company with her boyfriend since he's come onto the yard a few weeks ago??
