Swollen Vagina

Hi

Today I saw my mare has a swollen vagina? It isn't cut or sore and feel like air bags to touch. She is in good health and isn't trying to itch it or anything. I think she's in season but unusually for mare she has hardly any symptoms. Anyone seen this before?

No and I have had 3 mares. Ring your vet for advice.

Ring your vet and also check inside her for any signs of anything amiss. Even if you see what looks like a tiny injury call your vet.

There is no blood or pus it seem full of air. Ok I'll give the vet a call thanks

Give your vet a ring. Is it all pink? Could be a prolapse and needs seeing to regardless. Do let us know, hope she's ok.

It has gone down by more than half the swelling today I got told when they have a heavy season it can engorge! Hope this is it!

I'm neither a vet, nor particularly qualified, in such matters, but I would be very surprised if a mare was genuinely cycling, at this time of year, and unaided.

Think back, 9 or 10 months, COULD she be in foal? All of my mares seem to acquire a flabby fanny, as they approach parturition. Just a thought!

Alec I still have one cycling shes like her mum she does as well she could be suffering from a touch of frost bite.

Is the vulva swollen just one side ? I know my mare had this abnormal swelling, but when I got my vet to have a look they reckoned she had an allergic reaction to something . Still to this day I don't know what it was, but the swelling had gone down the next day thankfully .

Perhaps get a vet
