Swwet itch? would this cause her to be ultra sensitive?

My 3yr old cob is very sensitive around along her crest toward her whiter area, the usual shaking when you touch the area even with firm pressure so its not like am tickling her. When am on her if he reins touch this area she gets annoyed. Its def not pain in the back or whiters, absolutely no reaction when pressed, so obv an annotying tickling sensation??. Also she hates her mane being combed especially these areas.
So, yesterday i noticed it looked as though she had been rubbing her mane slightly and certainly her dock had a rummage through the hair and unable to see anything raw or sore but will check again today.
Does this sound like sweet itch and if so would it cause her to be very sensitive? never had a problem with sweet itch on any horse i have owned in the past, so help or advice would be good. Thanks

my mare has mild sweetich. just hogged her mane again so it's easier to treat...she's only affected with her mane and tail but in worse cases it can cause them to rub areas all over their body and i can imagine they would be quite irritable and sensitive

Short answer - yes! It does sound like sweet itch too. The best thing is to get her a sweet itch rug, I have yet to find any potion (and I have tried alot!) that keeps the midges off well enough to stop the reaction.

My mare only has mild sweet itch and is kept comfortable by being turned out in a sweet itch rug from march to end oct (assuming the bloomin' midges are gone by then!), but if I am late to get her rug on in the year and some midges have already got to her then she is almost unrideable as you only have to barely touch her mane or wither area and she shakes and arches her neck as it is so uncomfortable and itchy for her. A couple of weeks of being always in her rug while the reaction calms down sorts things out. Means that as soon as she is out of full neck rugs in the winter, she is straight into her sweet itch rug, even if it means she wears it under her turnout.

Yes. Both my sweet itch ponies are very sensitive about having you doing anything around their ears and top of the crest. I think that its quite often a bit of a sore area, with me putting creams on etc, so they don't like it being messed with. Its the one bit that can still be got at when they have a rug on, as they always seem to get their ears out of the hoodies.

This would make alot of sense then. She has rubbed her mane from what i can see but has a little on her tail. Theres no really solid bits of fence or trees she could get at to have a good rub, but any chance she has she will rub her tail
Will try a sweet itch rug i think and see if it makes a difference.
