Hello everyone! I’m Shreya and I have been looking into syndicates to join. Currently looking at Owners group, old gold. How do you go on about picking a horse and what are things I should be looking at potentially? Also, what syndicates provide better benefits on joining and pros/cons of joining a 3000 member syndicate vs a 200 or lesser one.
Ps - this is just a hobby and I have loved riding so just looking for quality suggestions

I'm having a lot of fun with Owners Group. Choose one with a trainer relatively near you for yard visits etc. The large syndicates are cheaper so more accessible, but it does mean you won’t stand much of a chance getting owners' badges, but it's still fun going along to watch them race.
Choose between a flat or a jumper, pick a horse that runs at the kind of racetracks you can get to and enjoy. Shares in Paul Nicholls trained Gillespie should be coming up soon and he's a lovely big long distance chasing type if you don’t mind being patient with a horse. Otherwise, I've enjoyed my horse with Ben Pauling the most as get really good video updates quite frequently and he's a trainer on a great upward trajectory.

I've had 2 horses with Owner's Group.

Plusses are that the cost is set at the start, no more to pay. I have been on a stable visit, which was interesting. I applied for a race day pass but didn't get one, and it would have been for one person anyway, not two. The communication is good and I get regular video updates and news.

Minuses: I have had 2 horses with them. The first, a mare, was injured before she raced. She was retired to stud. The second did a few races, but his heart wasn't in it and he too retired! So, I have not been lucky and, of 2 horses, have only had one who did a very few runs.

It is the lower end of racing, mine were, where they are in a small yard and brought to do low level races. It is kind of a way for the trainer to make a living, from numerous owners, with low expectations. The trainer did say that if an owner is too ambitions they are not welcome.

If I were to do it again, I think I would rather pay more and have a better horse in meaningful training. I simply chose two that were stabled close enough to go to the stable visits.

Oh, I also have a tiny share in Clarkson's horse. I found all the info on the website, but they don't seem to email me with updates so I really have no idea how he is doing as I rarely think to look.

ETA, I had a browse on my emails, and it appears that The Hawkstonian is with Old Gold Racing. I can see the updates now, he is entered for a couple of races and I could apply for an owner's ballot.

I've had/have five with Old Gold (two pts from non racing incidents, one retired, two in training, ) and really like them as an organisation. Great comms, videos, regular emails, the two ballots I've applied for (one was a raceday, one a yard visit) I was successful in too.

Choosing wise - I went by trainer (and their location) and all of mine have been jump horses.

Hi! Thank you for responding, this definitely helps, could I ask you how do I go about researching trainers close to me? I am based in Hertfordshire, I did see a horse on old gold’s website to be made available soon, owned by the cumani family, any info on that?

Thanks for this, where could I find smaller syndicates and any thoughts on fairmarc by lucinda rusell under middleham park racing? Also Paul Nicholls has another to be made available soon at old gold named paddy depole, could I ask where would Gillespie’s shares be made available?

I'm with Old Gold and Owners Group and have been lucky having good horses. I like the idea of unbroken horses as that means no one has tried them and so unknown, its worked up to now as struck gold with Stage Star but then I always loved his dam Sparky May so had to have him. I bought into another Gillespie and he won on his first outing much to my amazement as he is bred to be a staying chaser. All mine are with Paul Nicholls who is not far from me and I have had a few stable visits, also when horses are out of training for whatever reason they go to Equiprep in Wiltshire and the facilities and care they get are truly amazing. With OG you also get a monthly magazine as well as weekly updates from the trainer and regular videos.

I got a share in Ile De Jersey for Christmas who is with Owners Group. She hasn’t run again yet after being rehabbed for an injury but she’s won over hurdles and fences.

I’ve just treated myself to a share in the new Old Gold horse, Akimos, who is also trained by Nicky Henderson and is a grey too (bonus!).
