I had one of those phone calls this evening that every horse owner dreads.., a 'don't want to alarm you but' calls.

Ruby came in from the field with a cut on her stifle and the YM wasn't sure if it needed a stitch or not. OH was working from home today so I was able to toddle up to the yard and check it out. It was only a tiny cut - 2cm at most, but was right over Ruby's stifle.

Long story, short - just got back from horspital where Ruby has been admitted. She's been x-rayed and scanned. We think she's been kicked by my cob and has a bone chip and a potentially compromised joint. Vet wasn't sure if the joint is leaking synovial fluid and he is reluctant to tap the joint in case it isn't affected. She's on intensive ABs and will be re-scanned in the morning. If the joint has been compromised it will be flushed under GA and she'll have the bone chip removed at the same.

She's only 2 and took it all in her stride, I'm so proud of her.

Please - does anyone have experience of this type of injury and can I pinch/beg/borrow a few vibes that may be going spare???

We've had two horse at my yard that were kicked in the feild which resulted in synovial fluid leaking out. Both went onto make a full recovery.

Hope you girl gets better soon.

my mare got kicked and severed her tendon sheath and her wound was leaking synovial fluid, my mare made an excellent although not very speedy recovery and is back competing now

my fingers are crossed x

Daisy kicked herself and the synovial fluid leaked under the skin causing a gold ball sized lump on her leg. Unfortunately at that point she had thick feathers and so the vet didn't manage to correctly diagnose her lameness for two weeks as you couldn't see or feel the swelling through her feathers. She had some steriods, was heavily bandaged for 10 days, another two weeks on box rest and then another month off in the field before coming back into full work. A slightly different story to yours but D was absolutely fine.

Exactly the same injury to a then 3yo belonging to a friend - joint flushed and horse backed and brought on them sold to a local dressage trainer who qualified him for NFSM and sold him for 3 x time money around 5months later - as far as I know he is still fine but sold a long way away
