Can anyone recommend a decent pony saddle for a slim built Sec A pony?
I like Wintecs and don't mind paying for something that will make my grandkids feel safe and secure. This is my first pony for them ;o0) and the boy is 3 and two girls are 6.
I'm finding they are mostly 12" but some say that's for age up to 6. so may need one slightly bigger?
Any advice appreciated

hi, my narrow section a has a maxam, bought 2nd hand for £45 on ebay. Perfect size and easy for the kids

Welsh As can be tricy to fit, you may or may not find a synthetic that truly works. The 12" saddles you're talking about, I presume they are cub saddles? I find that they are often too low at the back even with only tots in them, and you can't lift them in any way. A fine Welsh A may well have withers which will make this worse.

The Thorowgood PC, and Wintec pony saddles, only come in a 15" and upwards and may not be short enough to fit within his ribcage even if it othewise fits. I find many As need a 14" saddle.

Are you using a fitter? Even with light riders it is easy to get it wrong, I see the results of poorly fitted pony saddles all the time, sometimes the cheaper option in the long run is to work with a fitter and get the right saddle first time, even if it is more expensive.

I'd be more inclined to go with something about 14 inch. The cub saddles are awful for even shetlands (I prefer to use a saddle 'pad' for tinies) as they either fit or they don't, and when they don't they cause children to tip forwards.

It may be worth looking into seeing if your saddler can find a nice leather one, which will 'sit' better than a synthetic. I know people rave about synthetics but IME they never do sit right, and they're prone to tipping.

The native pony co saddles and little ideal WH saddles are perfect. And they hold their value.

I have had fun and games with saddles for my Sec A and Sec B.

Agree with the above about investing in a nice 2nd hand leather one. Mine have both ended up with 14" Barnsby Pony Club saddles. 15" really was too long for both ponies.

Thank you so much for this valuable advice. I'm used to fitting a high withered wide TB, but this pony may turn out to be as bad!
I'm loaning her from a rescue centre for my grandkids. I only see them a couple of times a week after school and two days in the holidays so, when I said I didn't mind spending a bit, I didn't really mean as much as a leather one would cost
I will make sure she is comfortable though, I want the kids to have a happy contented pony to play with so I'll look into a second hand one.
Thanks again all.
