Hi All,

I have a pair of rather worn stirrup leathers on my Wintec saddle that I'd like to replace, and am wondering whether to get leather ones again or the synthetic ones to match the saddle?
Has anyone had any experience of the synthetic leathers? Are they any good? Which ones would you recommend?

Thanks

I've used synthetic Thorowgoods on my T/good saddles, which are fine, but even better are the Wintec Webbers; because they work on a 'hook' system rather than a buckle there's only one thickness of strap between your leg and the saddle.

Both are very hard-wearing and I would happily recommend either.

i personally dont like the wintec ones. but for my kieffer i have there own leathers which are not leather but very very supple (id say synthetic) they are also non stretch .

My daughter has Thorogood stirrup leathers on her synthetic saddle and they are fine especially for her and her pony as hard wearing and easy to clean, but for me I cant go past my Lovett and Ricketts saddle and Stubben leathers and stirrups!!

Personally I wouldn't bother with the Wintec ones again: they wore through in next to no time and one minute they were OK, the next they were dangerous, so not worth the money in my opinion.

I use leather ones on my current wintec saddle and they're fine: another moan about wintec is the fact that the girth straps are made out of plastic and they're wearing through and soon I shall have to get them replaced. Their saddles cost enough but don't seem to last

Just something to bear in mind the rule of thumb is you are not supposed to use leather on synthetic saddles, they must be synthetic on synthetic.

Likewise you should really use leather on leather saddles.

I've got wintec webbers on my wintec vsd and i really like them, had them 6 months (ish) now and they're as good as new.

Just a personal preference, but synthetic stirrup leathers are a pet hate of mine! To me they always feel stiff and never seem to bend properly around the bar, and the ones I've had have had cracks all over them down to the webbing. I much prefer leather ones!

Out of interest, the using synthetic on synthetic rule, is that a safety/function thing, or a looks/convention thing?

Its a function thing, the saddler told me never to use leather on a synthetic saddle and also when I was buying stirrup leathers I was told the same in the tack shop, apparantly the two materials can effect each other.

Another vote for the Kieffer 'leathers'. I have had mine over a year and you can still hardly see any wear. I believe they are part synthetic and part leather. Used them on my Kieffer saddle, then a Wintec and now a Thorowgood! Got mine from Ebay.
