Hi,
Jus wondering what you all use to clean your tack with (sponge/cloth wise) and whether you have an ideal sponge/cloth you use?
I use Carr, Day & Martin tack cleaner and also the conditioner and ATM use those little sponges with the scrubbie bit on one side, sponge on the other. They fit neatly into my hand, but they go all squishy and a bit useless after a couple of goes.
What do you recommend?
Cheers
Bryndu :)

I buy big car-washing sponges from the Pound Shop and cut them into sections to use for my tack. I use a bar of saddle soap and it all gets conditioned occasionally with Ko-cho-line. Luvvly-jubbly :)

What a good idea.....many thanks

Whats tack cleaning ???Lol sorry reading this post has just made me feel very guilty.

I use a sponge and water to clean with + a bit of elbow grease

Then just a rag with some saddle glycerine soap on just carr day and martin

Then with another rag massage some Ko cho line (?sp) in.

i use flexilan heated up a bit- and use a small paintbrush to work the grime off then some normal washing up sponges for applying saddle soap with minimal warm water after to remove any excess oil, then an old teeshirt to remove any remaining soap/oil/water/grime

Micro cleaning cloth (for dusting?) available in supermarkets

Good for cleaning and keep dry one for giving a final once over

Gives a great finish

Many thanks everybody....lots of choice..

Larfed out loud at 'What's tack cleaning'...I am one of those 'trained' people who had tack cleaning after every ride drummed in to them.....so I just can't leave it alone!!!!! ;)

I use a flannel for tack cleaning and for putting on saddle soap, find it's just rough enough to do the job. I mostly use Horseman's one step for cleaning, then once in a while I do a warm water wash and use traditional saddle soap as the one step does sometimes leave it a bit sticky.

Perhaps you can get therapy:rolleyes::rolleyes:, I must admit that I have just cleaned my tack .!!Only cos it got soaked and I havnt cleaned it for months.(But believe me,I do inspect the stitching and condition regularly )

Old socks are brilliant, especially sports socks which I turn inside out and use.
I also find the sponges sold in the baby section of supermarkets (cheaper the better) really good.

Also, after years of using Albion tack cleaner I was given some Prestige leather cleaner. It is amazing stuff, you only need a micro dot of it and it cuts through grease and gunk like nothing else.

I use the little round baby sponges too...the fine ones that come in a little square bag & are a bit 'moist'.

As a fitter I recommend a very simple regime - an old fashioned (cheap!) woven white dishcloth from the supermarket, it gives enough texture to aid your elbow grease, and warm water only. No saddle soap, no oil, and a light application of conditioner when necessary. If you want the scientific whys and wherefores check out the poster "c4" on the Ultimate Dressage forum, brilliant at explaning how leather works, and how products affect it.
