Started my boy with a martingale as he needed it and a flash on the Noseband, now I know how to get him working correctly we don't need either!! We do everything in a snaffle, galloping (yes ex racer with brakes! Lol)jumping. Etc ... However my sharer insists on putting both back on him...and a even tried a stronger bit. When I wasn't there!. He's so laid back he's almost horizintal lol anyone else find the more tack seems to equal more confidence in rider? It drives me mad especially when I know he doesn't need it!!
Virtual Brownie cake for anyone that's got this far :-)

yes i agree with u i own an exrace and i do moat things i a snaffle too other than cross country xx but he takes the micky with other riders maybe he does this with your sharer? maybe she just needs the bond like u have with him? x

I'm going today to watch them together. He does take the Micky with her but its usually him being very lazy /slow and that's it, with me be can be quite sharp at times, when I ride him he does exactly as I ask.. I know horses change as to who rides them but he's given her no reason to need extra tack... Except Maybe spurs lol (which I don't use)lol

No I don't think tack =confidence. I think it is the relationship you build that creates confidence. If you don't connect and have trust... There is no confidence in the horse and none has the horse in you...

I know what you mean, a fried of mine (despite having rather poor hands, and she knows this!) says she would much rather a stronger bit to make her feel more confident on a snaffle mouthed lad she rides - he just has good acceleration, not bad breaks!

She has spent time faffing about with various bits of kit before, IMO to avoid having to step up the work to something more challenging than walk, trot, canter in a school.

It surprises me that there are a lot of people who appear to be a little frightened of their horses, yet even more terrified of admitting this to an instructor and actually working on solving the problem!!

Id be annoyed if someone was making tack decisions and changing the tack around on my horse without permission, is this normal for sharers?
Ive no idea is more tack = more confidence for some people, I suppose it must for some people but Ive never given it any thought.

I know my breastplate gives me confidence xc when my saddle has never actually moved! But this isn't something that affects the horse much. At the end of the day it's your horse so its ultimately your decision what tack he wears. As others have said, maybe your sharer lacks trust in the horse and vice versa? Has she had any lessons on him? You say he needed both until you got him working correctly- maybe she is struggling to do the same?

It shouldn't be (speaking as a sharer). Anytime I've felt a change of tack might be worth trying I've talked to the owner about it. Never anything major, tho, usually just a change of bit to something dressage legal! I think the OP has the right to feel rather ticked off if her sharer has been trying different bits without her permission.

Well went today and it was quite obvious my lovely boy just takes the p... With her... Going slow, snatching reins, stopping for no reason... I never knew he was such a pain for her!! Gave her a few pointers, things to practice and at the end they were working well together and martingale free shes now happy to leave all tack alone from now. She's also agreed to regular lessons with either me or my instructor m to help confidence which is good. :-)
