Whatever happened to biscuits? Or at least, I think that's what they were called. Those rubber circles you put inside the rings on snaffles and so on. Everyone seemed to be using them when I was a kid but I can't recall seeing any for about 10 years now. Or maybe I just haven't noticed...

What other tack fashions can people recall?

westrop overeach boots - the ones that used to clack as your horse moved, all the SJ wannabees had them!!
as for bit guards, i can't remember the last time i saw a set!
fashions of today are lambswool half pads, crochet ear covers, and anything with john wittaker on it!!

Not sure if you can see them well in this but do you mean these?

If so I've used them on my last 2 horses so I'd say they're definatly still used.

ETA you can see them better on my old pony http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m278/Catzzwow/DVC00218.jpg

Drop nosebands used to be very popular!

Yes they're the ones!

Are they to stop the bit coming through the mouth if they take a pull?

[/ QUOTE ]

They protect the corners of the mouth from pinches or rubs and keep the bit central. So I guess yes in a way they could be used for stopping the bit coming through the mouth.

When I was a kid it was my ambition to one day own a pair of westropp overreach boots (guilty confession - I still have this ambition!

I know 4 horses that have bit guards, including mine, the one I rode before that and two separate friends... maybe it is a Yorkshire thing?

I use biscuits on mine...he has fleshy lips though and they stop him getting rubbed. You can still get westrop petal boots. I actually think they are the best ones you can buy as they are much safer than other styles. I don't use overreach boots though....don't need them.
Fashions - agree about flashes. All bridles seem to have them and I hate them! Wish you could by proper drop nosebands, the ones that adjust at the front. Never see them now.
These days it's all fluffy half pads, 5 point breastplates, bling, racing whips and GPA hats!!

Flashes have their place, I did have my horse in one for about 9 months while I worked through his evasive phase (he can be extremely stubborn and it was preferable to a stronger bit). But that was a flash converter, so no horrible loop on the noseband.

However I hate seeing horses in them simply because their bridle came with one.

I have used bit rings for the last 20 years - I thought you were supposed to always use them with a loose ring bit to stop pinching? Both my horses have them on their bits at the moment.

I dont have the money to be fashionable! I still have string vest style sweat rugs, and a jute rug that must be 30 years old. P

The only "fashion" I will admit to is being influenced by some friends about 10 years ago, having some spare birthday money and buying a coloured libbys scrawbrigg bridle....
wink.gif
I got tanked off with across a field and its hung in my tack room ever since!

just thought of another fashion item.....parelli rope halters!!! everyone seems to have one, I prefer a stallion chain for my strong coblet - far more effective!!

I find it hilaroius that people pay much money for those halters, we use old fashioned rope halters (and have done for over 30 years!) which cost about £4 per go!
