A pondering! Does the colour of you horse influence the colour of tack you prefer or the jacket colours you wear.

When it comes to plain jackets I have preferred black because my horse is black and I think it looks nicer but I see from various threads most people far prefer navy on a lady. Do you think Navy goes as well with a very dark horse? Similarly for my tweed I went with a blue grey again less popular.

When it comes to tack colour almost regardless of horse colour my favourite by far is a very dark brown. I did end up with some black tack and I quite like it on a black horse but that's about it. However black tack seems to be much more popular with dressage riders I think??

I have also had some bright tan coloured tack and whilst I wasn't keen with it on a black horse but may have liked it on a chestnut or bright bay.

So does your horses colour influence what tack / jackets you go for?

We have light brown tack on a palomino & white coloured - used to have black but it looked a right plonker!! Daughter wears an electric blue show jacket which really compliments his colouring :)

Black tack is common in dressage as it is considered 'correct', in the same way that brown is in showing.

Concerning jacket colour vs horse colour, it would have some bearing in terms of tweed and stock/tie colour for me, as the right choice can really complement a horse's appearance.

For show jackets, again navy is considered correct for ladies, black has traditionally been for men (although I believe widows are 'entitled' to wear black on the hunting field - don't know if anyone can confirm that?!). Personally I'm partial to wearing a black jacket, but on a black horse I think I'd actually prefer a really deep navy/midnight blue, I think it would look nicer.

Yep, I've had brown (havannah) tack on a chestnut & skewbald, black tack on a bright bay, and the new lad, dark bay has a black saddle and havannah brown bridle (he will be getting a black bridle in time!!)

Jacket wise, I always wore Navy, however i did buy a brown tweed for the skewbald, and a greed tweed for a chestnut - have now just replaced my navy for the dark bay as well... have worn the green tweed with him too.

I think is does. My last horse was in dark Havana which looked fab, black just looked too much as she had a lot of white on her face.
For current boy he is in black tack, he can go a really nice liver chestnut as well as a wishy washy one but black just seems to look better on him.
I have alway worn a black jacket (hoped they would be more flattering! :D) but for some reason i think i should have got a navy one as i think it would suit my boy better. Im not planning on getting one as my current one is an Animo and i def cant afford to replace it!

I always have brown tack just because I much prefer it and for working Hunter etc :)

I have always had a navy jacket, just my preference although love grey but would have to change my hat etc!

I also has blue tweed on one of my very dark bay ponies for showing although for A and J prefer green so I suppose to me it matters for tweed but not for SJ etc

Ladies may wear black or navy jackets per the guidance issued by our hunt - farmers (male or female) wear black as far as I am aware....

I like navy jackets and dark havana tack on any colour horse :)

Suziq77 (sorry, I can't quote from my phone!) - I know that black or navy can both be worn, I meant traditionally, which is of course is where most preferences originate from!

I always have black tack - i rarely like brown tack.
Nothing wrong with it just personal preference - browns just not a colour i like in anything in the world - not just horses.

So i have black tack and boots etc on greys bays dark bays and black. Currently on brighter bay and black.

But i always wear navy - hat jacket etc, and i have a thing for navy numnhas. Although did have black hat and jacket when i was younger. And had a blue tweed jacket for pc.

In the same sense i tend to go for navy in most things i wear/have in general life too

Agree with this also.

However, I did swap my black jacket for a navy one when I got my latest piebald as he is mostly black and we sorted of blended in together. Now that I have it I prefer Navy on any horse. You couldn't tell sometimes where he stopped and I started.

Also I will confess my XC colours used to be Black & White or Navy & White Quarters but changed them to bright emerald green when I got him as it did look a bit weird to be honest and you can always spot us a mile away on the course now.

yes absolutely.

My horse is a deep red chestnut with white blaze and socks :) all my tack is havana and for competitions i chose a green tweed jacket as it really compliments her. :)

Used to have brown tack for little chestnut pony when I had him, but now have black tack for white/grey horse as his bridle was black and I think it looks smart. Although I am harking after a brown bridle... But then it wouldn't match his saddle ;)
I've only ever had my green/blue tweed and am considering a navy jacket for chrimbo present since I could use it with navy hat silk :) Actually would love a bright blue equiport jacket, but sadly I think not suitable for pony club...
And like showjumpingfilly, I tend to wear navy/black ;)

What ever fits and is cheapest.

Apart from horrid bright tan tack. Cannot stand this.

Pretty much this, I have by default a navy show jacket as it was £20 at Chatworth HT years ago, never found one to fit since. It looks nice on my chestnut though. I prefer black tack but my instructions to my saddle fitter were bring what you think will fit, if it is brown it's brown, though I can't say I wasn't pleased that I got a black saddle, think it looks sharper for dressage against his white saddle cloth.

I have preferences but will choose the cheaper when given the choice. If cost doesn't change I go for black tack, navy jacket and when I get one a greeny/purple Harris tweed.

Really interesting replies.
I don't think I have ever had a navy jacket apart from as a child and I probably go for black as it is more what I would wear in ordinary clothes as I am not really a navy person. However everyone seems to say Navy so much more flattering over a certain age (and I am certainly over that ) so maybe I will make the change at sometime - just had in my head black better with black horse. Although I have still to be convinced by black tack oddly enough!

I much prefer all brown tack although when I was given a horse whose tack was black it was all fancy stitched and with brass buckles.
I hate black clothing so either navy, tweed or brown.

i think different tweeds can really make or break an outfit for showing for example.
mine is not technically correct as is not green - but shows her up far better (same tweed i wear for dresssage and SJ for BE)
tack - havana all the way for me
saddle pads though - will not wear a white patch for DR as looks daft on my mare - so i stick with saddle shaped numnah and it goes far better and compliments her shape far more

I like Navy but do like black on a black horse, always felt my Navy Jacket didnt look great on T.
Like black tack, but just bought a brown saddle, so now sporting black bridle/brown saddle not a good combo!! :D
