Just read the 'what is not insured' of my policy and it says

Theft of any item unless force and violence has been used to get into or out of a building, caravan, vehicle or it is stolen from within an attended vehicle.

So, does this mean if someone breaks into the tack room and steals tack then Im not covered unless Im there and it gets violent?

If so totally pointless in having tack insured really!

Is this the case with all insurance companies?

No, don't panic :p

Foricble and Violent entry is a standard insurance term, simply means that the door must have been forced open / smashed in rather than simply walking in through an unlocked door.

In other words if someone steals stuff whilst the door is not locked and/or left open you are not covered, if it is locked and someone breaks in you are covered.

Would clarify with the insurance company, but I would interpret that to be they would have to force their way into a locked tack room, can't really expect them to insure tack left in an unlocked tack room that anyone could walk into.
From the violence side I would also take that to be similar to force i.e. smashing a window to gain entry.
Alway better to check these with the insurance company so you know where you stand if you ever have to make a claim (does the policy give you a list of definitions?)

Both typing the same thing at the same time!!!

From what i have been told this means is that the thief has to have caused damage to the building, lock etc etc for the theft to be covered. The violence aspect is simply the damaging of the lock, building etc, the forcible explains itself really.

If you left your tack room open and the thief wondered in and took your tack and wondered out again the tack would not be covered.

Hope that clears it up a bit, second hand info from a friend in the business :)

Personally I think you are best insuring your tack with your house contents and having an all risks put on it so it is covered anywhere it goes. Be extra careful to read the small print because when our yard was robbed hardly anyone got paid - they hadn't noticed that their tack was not in brick buildings with a mortice lock, or there were more than 3 horses kept there. I was lucky and got paid but many people lost thousands of £s worth

I think you have to have a 5 lever lock and a window lock (if you have a window) so if these were locked and then it is smashed into you are then insured

Fatpiggy - be aware that if you put your tack on your household contents the same theft limitation will usually apply (I work in this area and deal with it daily).

Even on high net worth all risks policies theft restrictions are usual when items are left in commual areas i.e. livery yards. Unattended vehicle restrictions normally apply too.

One other thing to consider is that if you need to claim for a lost / stolen tack item you will then loose your no claims discount on your household policy - this can become very expensive! If you have a stand alone tack policy obviously this is not a problem.
