My new tack room floor is concrete and I'm trying to decide what to do with the floor before I move things in. The tack room walls and ceiling will be fully insulated so I want to do something with the floor to help keep it warm and easy to clean. Is it possible to put vinyl/Lino straight onto concrete or is there a better flooring or an insulating layer I can put down before the Lino?

Also would you paint wooden tack room walls or leave them wood? I can't decide.

How about tiles on the floor and paint the walls with a silk emulsion, that way you can wipe down and repaint easily. Check out B and Q Wickes and Homebase for offers on floor tiles and paint :)

I love this stuff, its cheap and durable. I have it in front of stable doors, gateways, tackroom and even lining my van! Its light enough to move without being so light it moves in day to day use if that makes sense. It also cleans up well

You could always use it upside down as underlay if you wanted a lighter lino floor

Personally i would use a light coloured or natural wood 'wash' type of woodstain on the walls - think shabby chic!

Unless you do it properly and patiently with at least a couple of coats painting plain wood is very hard work. It took me two days to paint the inside of a chicken shed and i swore never again

Do you glue it down or does it just stay in place?

It just stays in place, its heavier than it looks and stays naturally flat a bit like a rubber cat mat or door mat

Did i even add a link?!

Of course there is always a trip hazard with these sorts of things but my ponies and i have never tripped on it

That looks good. Is it easy to clean? I likes the idea of Lino as I could easily mop it if I make a mess tack cleaning or wet dog paws in winter.

I was looking at putting rubber mats in the covered area/wash bay which is 14'x18' but was worried about having to lift them all if I needed to move them. This looks much better for that area and for an area in the barn where the feed bins will be. I also have a slight ramp down from the back of covered area to the arena so this might work if the ramp gets slippery in winter.

I would use wood stain on the walls and leave the concrete flooring (provided it is not polished concrete - very slippery when wet) and seal the concrete to make spills easier to clean and less likely to stain.

Concrete is super hard wearing, easy to keep clean and if you clean out the tack room once a year, attack it with a high pressure hose before re-polishing the wood, it will stay sparkling for years to come.

Yep, I'd leave the concrete and seal it with garage floor paint (from screwfix or somewhere like that). It won't even let engine oil through and is super tough, light coloured and hard wearing. Not slippy at all as it keeps roughness of concrete underneath. And inexpensive.

Warmth is a big factor especially as we've gone to the trouble of having it insulated and we're about to have major building work done on the house so I am going to be spending a lot of time out in the tack room over the next 6 months.
I'll definitely seal or paint the concrete in the barn as I'm planning on keeping feed there as well as hay.
Wood stain sounds easier than paint, less likely to streak.
