As part of some building work I'm getting a new tack room which means I can finally get everything out of the empty loose box and store my saddles out of OHs shed! It won't have running water so sadly a sink and washing machine are out of the question but otherwise it's a 10x6ft blank canvas.

Wishlist must haves?

Lots of shelves for rugs, and saddleracks/bridleracks.

IKEA if you want free standing shelving, otherwise strongly attached to wall.

Our tackroom is block lined with painted chipboard, and this really stops the tack getting damp and mouldy.

A four pronged hook hanging from the ceiling to use for cleaning bridles.

We also have an old gateleg table from a charity shop in the corner of ours which is great for cleaning tack and boxes can be stored underneath.

Clear plastic boxes with lids for storing clean, dry rugs and numnahs, etc. Stack them on top of one another from floor height upwards to save space. You can see where everything is at a glance, and it keeps them tidy and free of spiders. It's also fairly rodent proof - obviously keep an eye out for any signs of something gnawing through the plastic, but I've never had any issues with this so far. I just buy mine wherever has them cheapest, so Tesco or the pound shops.

Some sort of whiteboard on the wall or the back of the door, for keeping useful contact details to hand, and also making a note of appointments with vet, farrier, etc.

You can make a custom sized bridle rack by securing a plank of wood to a wall and attaching however many large coat hooks as you have bridles to that. The bottom bit of the hook is handy for looping the buckle end of the reins up onto to keep them clear of the floor. Personally, I'd arrange any saddle racks along beneath this, thus having them at a height where they can double up as a stand for cleaning purposes.

Ten by six is a decent sized area, but I'd try to keep one of the longer walls at least partially clear of stuff to ensure that you have enough floor left to move around on :)

Hooks, shelving, storage boxes, table, fridge, chair/stool, kettle, white board (I put all the tel numbers on it in case of emergency) and a few signs hanging up which amuse me :)
Apart from that I have a fire extinguisher and an alarm on the door/s

For how many horses, how many people?

Saddle holders fixed to the wall, bridle hangers, same.

Fridge and kettle and/or coffee maker are in the office, not in the tack room.

Big strong solid door. Triple fishing hooks, like you'd use for catching tuna or shark and a big sign on the outside of the tack room, marked "fishing tackle drying room".

The whiteboard where you can note down important information is a really useful idea. Fix a pen and a wiper to the board with ball-link chain (because you can be sure that if the pen falls on the floor, you'll stand on it and break it, and the wiper will get lost).

And a calendar, pinned on the back of the door.

KB it's for me and 2 horses (plus many years of accumulated stuff)...probably should have mentioned it'll be 3 metres from the back door so am not too worried about calendars, kettles etc! It's a case of moving stuff from the loose box so I already have various racks, boxes etc but I like the coat hook idea. And a gateleg table sounds like a good idea...

Previous owners of our house had a garage built on, and fitted something like a half gate-leg table to the wall, just inside the door. It's like a narrow shelf about 4" (10cm) wide fixed to the wall, with a half-round table hinged to it, with a gate-leg that doesn't reach to the floor, and is hinged to a wodden batten that runs vertically down the wall from the centre of the shelf... I don't know if that's clear enough. Being rounded, there is no corner to bang against; useful in a tight space.

Ah, I've found one on Amazon UK for you.

You need to get yourself a non- hoarding gene. I had a new tack room built about two years ago. I remember looking at it on day 1 and swearing it would always be kept neat and tidy with no STUFF.

Two years later I have to wade through stuff (saddles, reins, rugs beyond repair) that should have been sold (or better still not bought), given away or thrown away. I feel a de clutter coming on.

Yes...I've ebayed some of the "stuff" but could probably still open my own bit bank. And I have 3 feed sacks full of bridles, which is ridiculous.
