Sooo i’m in need of some inspo.
My new stables at home are nearly built and ready for the horses to move in this weekend 🥳

I am in the process of organising my new tack room and been browsing endlessly online for storage ideas to make it look nice and tidy, at least to start with 🤣

Its 12x16ft. If anyone has some really organised rooms please post photos below so i can see how you’ve organised it, and if not what are your favourite hacks/ storage pieces in yours? All i have at the moment is 4 bridle hooks and saddle racks on the wall 🥲

Thank you ☺️

I have 2 sets of small plastic draws easily obtained from Argos and not expensive. I also have a cupboard with shelves, a 3 arm rug hanger and several bridle hooks on the back wall. A table and 3 chairs so that we can sit and have a coffee or and not forgetting the metal 3 space feed bin for the girls feeds.

good luck with your new stables and tack room, it sounds exciting.

I use a plastic garden storage chest for outdoor rugs, a freezer for feed bags, an old wardrobe and metal filling drawers for the other rugs and miscellaneous bits (first aid kit, boots, spare numnahs,etc..) plus a few coat racks for headcollars, bridles, helmet. Since it is a small room, I have attached the saddle racks to the inside of the door.

We use chest freezers for rugs etc but not stored in tack room liveries can store a small trunk like this > under the saddle racks https://www.homebase.co.uk/keter-ci...3V*MTcwMTgwOTY0My4xLjEuMTcwMTgwOTgzNC4wLjAuMA.. They are small and sturdy great for boots etc

I did this shelf 2 years ago and great for saddle pads.

Also umbrella stands are great for storing schooling whips Just found this one nice.....

Oh how exciting! I had plastic drawers which were really useful but two or three friends have used old filing cabinets. They work well and are rodent proof of course. I also got a metal chest from the tip for keeping rugs in which works well still. Oh and those big blue barrels are very useful for stuff you don’t need access to every day. Also like the Stubbs saddle mates as they can hold girths etc inside.

I've got a three and four shelf plastic set of shelves. Each holds two large plastic boxes, plus room on top for other bits and pieces.
Garden storage boxes for all the turnout rugs and a free standing roadworks side to hang my dirtier rugs!
Enormous plastic boxes for coolers etc.

At our livery yard we have a fab set up. So everyone has a plastic trunk, 2 sets of 4 plastic drawers (they are sooo useful) 2 saddle racks and 4 bridle/head collar hooks that are also used for hanging up riding hats, high viz etc. And rug shelves…and our favourite is the hanging rail for saddle pads!! It’s brilliant!

i love these shelves, garage shelving from halfords. nice and sturdy as they’re metal! maybe keep them tidier than mine though🤣

i have very limited space, but i also have a 3 compartment metal feed bin, a 3 arm rug hanger and a custom built tack cupboard. garden storage boxes outside the stables for rugs, plus smaller plastic ones for fly rugs and spare fencing things.

if i had a proper tack room, lots and lots (and lots) of hooks would be on my list!

Definitely lidded plastic boxes on shelves for most things. Keeps everything dry and dust free and keeps the mice out. I have heavy duty plastic garage shelving and found 'really useful' boxes which fit perfectly.

I find the shelves really useful and put boxes with lids on the bottom shelf for bits and pieces and then store rugs and saddlepads on the shelves. I put brushing boots etc in plastic drawers. Swinging rug rack is a godsend when you have wet rugs you need to dry and a swinging towel rack for storing numnahs on that are being used so that they can dry.

I find if you fold things well and keep them organised on the shelves then they can look tidy and smart. Anything that looks messy goes into a box.

I've just ordered one of those hang over the door storage thingys that most people use for shoes, for my horses brushing boots. They're always in random places...hopefully now they'll have a place to live lol. I'm sure the spare pockets will get stuffed with random stuff too! 😅

we have an inexpensive row of kitchen cabinets. That works really well as we have a sink with hot & cold water ( great for making feeds this time of year). Plus the cabinets/ draws come in very handy for storing stuff such as clippers / meds / bandages etc etc.

Our tack we keep in the house. Everything else is in the barn and mostly stored on heavy duty metal shelving. On the shelving I have a range of transparent plastic boxes from B&Q, labelled according to their contents. The biggest ones can take several turnout rugs, the next size down are great for exercise sheets, fleece rugs, thermatexes etc. Then smaller ones for fly masks, spare headcollars etc. It makes it really easy to find things when we are in a hurry. We did use to store rugs in chest freezers but found it difficult to locate the right rug when we needed to as we always had to rummage through.

That is very exciting for you OP, and lovely to be starting from scratch in a new and purpose-built building!

It is definitely worth sitting down and thinking about exactly what storage you need for what. So, do you need lots of bridle racks on the walls, or would shelves for a big rug collection be of more use? Things that are used regularly should be easy to reach, but occasional items (like out-of season rugs) could be stored higher up, or underneath something (and then swapped with current season rugs when required). Storage is much more satisfying to use if it is tailored to meet your exact needs.

If there is one near you then Ikea has lots of reasonably priced storage containers and units. The cheap kitchen units and wardrobe carcases can easily be adapted for tackroom use. They also have a variety of boxes, and sell a 1/4 size metal dustbin that I find great for keeping treats and other small edible things in so that they don't attract vermin. B&M and the Range also sell different plastic boxes and drawers.

Slightly off-track but this is something I've learnt about tackrooms over the years: one of the most useful things you can do is to seal the floor (with floor paint or concrete sealant, or cover it with well fitting vinyl), as it will significantly cut down on the amount of dust that gets on everything you put in there. Un-sealed (non-floated) concrete floors are constantly breaking down and producing dust, and it is so fine that it settles everywhere. Boarding the underside of the roof and painting it will also keep dust down and make removing cobwebs much easier.

I have two shelf units for smaller bits. Lots of big plastic boxes with lids for unused tack, harness, rugs, etc. They stack nicely and dont take up too much space. Metal dustbins for feed. An old kitchen table - stuff in plastic boxes on top; piles of rugs, buckets, old dog beds and other random junk underneath.
Lots of hooks screwed in any wooden uprights or beams, it's amazing how much stuff you can hang up! My favourite storage container is one of those long black trunks on wheels. Super useful for rugs, feed (fits 3 full bags of feed easily). Each stable has one or two wooden poles hanging across the walls for rugs. Drill holes in each end and suspend with plastic coated washing line.

One thing I found is that when we moved house, I went from a closed tackroom to one with a lot more ventilation - an open gate style door. No more mould. All my tack stays lovely and fresh! More dusty, yes, but zero mould. Probably not the most secure but I guess if someone really wants my scruffy tack collection they'll take it anyway.

I've got shelving units with plastic storage boxes for rugs. I've also got a 6ft tall office filing cabinet with roller doors that has all my random stuff in, it's great because I can shut the doors and it looks tidy. Small random crap is in a cheap plastic drawer set. Tack is in a large metal feed bin and feed is in another one. It should be tidy but never is. 😄

This is my arrangement...
Is that some sort of spray on insulation on the ceiling ? It looks lovely ( actually looks like an igloo / walls made of snow, its so bright and clean! 😍 )
Everyone's tack rooms are far cleaner and tidier than mine, and carpets on the floor!

We keep tack in the house in the utility as I’m a bit precious about it. Storage wise we managed to get hold of some big metal warehouse shelving from FB marketplace and then bought these https://www.aldi.co.uk/gardenline-145l-storage-trunk/p/066647065021500 from Aldi recently when they were a specialbuy, the plan being to use them to store spare rugs (of which I have far too many!). We then have the big garage hooks on the wall for the rugs that are in current rotation.

Feedwise the OH kindly bought me a rather posh metal feed bin with sections and a shelf for supplements. We store spare feed in chest freezers.

Yep. The roof is corrugated asbestos, slightly leaky and very inclined to drip condensation everywhere. This is spray insulation, as it turned out to be the cheapest way to remedy the situation. The fact that it brightened the entire room was an unexpected bonus but it has also evened out the temperature a lot. Unfortunately I am still trying to deal with the damp, 200-year-old granite walls might as well be sponges... (couldn't board it off for various reasons). But it's no different to the house...
