HORSE owners have been left thousands of pounds out of pocket after thieves raided a livery yard.
Two trailer boxes worth £5,000 each were among the haul taken from Little Downham Equestrian, near Ely.
The thieves, who cut through chains on the yards gates, also made off with a quad bike and dozens of saddles, bridles and head collars.
Gillian Meningen, who owns the livery yard with her son, Barry, said they felt violated by the incident.
She added: I still feel as sick as a parrot and I think all the horse owners feel violated.
A lot of valuable equipment has been stolen, which is devastating, but we are just grateful none of the horses was touched. They were very on edge when we came in on the next morning though.
Mrs Meningen, who has run the yard for two years, lives in Coveney and discovered the burglary when she turned up at the yard at 7am on Tuesday.
She and her son have horses grazing at the centre, but the majority are other peoples horses which they care for.
Mrs Meningen said: When I arrived at the yard I went to unlock the chain around the gate but saw that it was not on properly.
I just thought someone had not secured it from the night before but once my son had started feeding the horses, he noticed the tack container door was wide open.
So much had been taken and they even took the time to unclip head collars from the horses stable doors.
She is warning other horse owners to be on their guard.
Mrs Meningen, a freelance riding instructor, said: We thought our yard was really safe but obviously not. These people will go to any extremes to get what they want.
Police said the thieves would have used one or two large vehicles. They urged anyone who is offered cheap riding equipment to contact them on 0845 4564564.
