My boy is hogged and has all his legs etc trimmed. The problem is what do I do with his tail? Last year it was shaved at the sides but I really didn't like the look of it so I have let it grow a bit but I can't leave it like is is as I want to start doing a few local shows with him. Can I just get one of those pulling rakes (and can anyone remember the name please?) and just pull it neatly or do I have to have shaved sides with hogged and trimmed?

I posted in a thread lower down about the rake- I got mine from clipper sharp- used it last night and the finish is fab. You can't tell by looking at it that it is'nt pulled. Took 10 minutes instead of ten days too!! Really recommend

Didn't see your post - thanks for letting me know - now all I need to find out is if a pulled tail is OK

Oster tail rakes (or go to a pet shop and get a dog grooming rake for half the price!).

I would have thought that for local shows you'll be fine with a pulled tail, but am no expert.

or if you have wolsey clippers one of the bottom blades does pretty much same job if you comb through top of tail a few times. ( I know this from being at a very posh place where all tails etc had to be pulled etc solo combs etc had not been invented and danger money was never offered!) xx

A pulled tail will be absolutely fine for local level- and at county I *think* the Cobs have pulled tails rather than clipped/ hogged anyway as it gives a smarter finish

A pulled tail is correct for hogged/trimmed cobs for showing. Please don't just shave up the sides, it looks terrible because all the hair is the same length and it grows out looking like a bog brush. Pull it if he'll let you (when warm and relaxed after work) or if he's not keen you can carefully use a rake or thinning scissors to get a similar effect.

Years ago I was told by a (famous) hunter judge that the mark of a pro is a properly pulled and trimmed tail - amateurs plait !! This has stuck with me for years....

Fraid I have to agree and like to see a nicely pulled tail although I did cheat in the winter and used a 'rake'.

My other pet hate is very long tails bleugh!!
