I'm looking for one for field use. Usually I can find one with velcro at the top, and the opposite velcro attachement to be sewn onto the cover, but I can't find any here in the UK.
Zwie, apos for asking, never had occassion to bag my horses tail in field so why do you want to bag the tail in the field? Surely not good, fly season soon - well, in fact next week if we're in for the weather they have promised us. Horse'll need free tail for swishing!
No prob, Always_late. Always done it, summer or not - I suppose it's a showy thing where I come from (other side of world). Keeps tail in good condition and no sun bleach etc. They have no problem swishing tails while in bag, especially if it's a nice cotton bag.
Thanks for that - always wondered why show horses tails were in such good condition! Now I know. Can you offer some advice about calming down a tail? Our Hanovarian/TB has a really thick tail. Lovely to look at but... Anyway, she events and we don't show - too lazy(!) and just plait the top of the tail for dressage, but its very thick so the rest emerges from the plait like a thatch! Would like it to look slick - don't want to pull it. Any shampoo & conditioner on the market which would make it sleeker? She's a bay by the way. A bit cheekey of me but thanks!
Not cheeky at all!! We always use Champion tails products on our horse, and funnily enough also use 'leave' in' treatments once a week. Even just a cheap conditioner from the supermarket is good enough for this. I cover the tail in it, then leave it in over night, washing out the next day. Trial and eroor will find you a good one. LOL I sound like a hairdresser!
That would be my advice, as well as using a tail bag - it keeps it sleek and straight, and prevents sun bleach and weathered looking hair, (because the hair gets dried out) which can often cause the fly away hair-do!!
I have an acquaintance that swears by spray in furniture polish for fly away tails
but I don't think I'd go that far! there are too many good human and horsey hair products on the market these days.
Cannot recommend the tailgator ones enough - Chancer has a thick tail that reaches to the ground and in the winter I couldn't be without it. I have also put one on Cairo - saves tonnes of grooming and his tail has really grown since wearing it.
I worked with them to develop mane bags - another must if you have a gypsy cob or similar that you want a beautiful long mane in great condition.
They have a strap to double them up - great to keep out of the way if you are riding.
I have bought three from www.tailgator.co.uk I can't rate them highly enough !
I leave them on the ponies all the time. I am not sure I would like one that went under the tail at the top, like the swish one you posted, as they are very soft skinned there and I think it would rub them.
