My Haflinger, who use to have a magnificent thick long tail had it nearly all chewed off by calves that he was sharing a field with last winter. He loved grazing with the cows and their calves and would tolerate them chewing his tail. I tried every remedy that I could think off on his tail to try and deter them like Yum Yum and my own mix of vinegar and mustard but they loved them all!
I finally moved him away from the calves and his tail has taken nearly a year to recover and still isn't anywhere near long again and now he is in at night in a gated off area in a huge barn and there are calves next to him and they reach through and chew his tail - and he stands right next to them and lets them! Help - anyone know what I can put on his tail to stop them chewing it before it all goes again.

Colemans mustard - and lots of it idealy plat the tail up and then knot it so there is less to grab onto - though your lovely white haffy tail might go blonde!!!

Assume they are not chewing the top - how about bagging it if all anti-chew stuff fails. I use tailgator ones - great and as well as keeping it from being chewed will keep it clean and in perfect condition over winter.

Thank you so much to everyone who replied - I have tried Yum Yum - expensive and it didn't work!! But I haven't tried any of the others so I will work my way through all of them - the tail guard sounds great though.
Many thanks again to you all

Tail guard or plait it up. Nothing vile I tried stopped my tail chewer for very long, and I can't put liquid on, it freezes solid within seconds.

My arab mare has a bob tail now thanks to her foal, and the paint mare has her tail plaited at all times because the wretched foal started on hers too. She only sucks the end of the plaited tail now so it looks like a rather soggy paintbrush at times.
