anybody got any good ideas to stop one of our foals eating all the other horse's tails. how do i know it's her-could be something to do with she is the only one with a decent tail left! ha ha

I did use cribox spray this year, not sure its the most sensible idea but it did work, I did only spray it on the ends and none fell out. The previous year I used chilli powder mixed with water, that worked but not quite as well. I think fabric conditioner is meant to work too but have never tried that!

I don't think you can! My foal ate every horses tail that would let him and bogged my friends pony's mane. He grew out of it after his first year and luckily before everyone stopped talking to me and he was put in isolation!

Cribox, creosote, jeyes - have tried them all with various degrees of success/failure! Really boring, but they do grow out of it!

My colt foal was a tail chewer. His poor mother and a pony companion were both "eaten". Putting a mixture of vasaline and hot chilli powder on the pony's tail did stop him from losing his remaining tail hair.

thank you i will be trying each one out, let's see which one puts her off!! luckily she is only out with another foal, a retired, and a 3 year old so it doesn't matter too much, good job it isn't one of the performance horses. I haven't had this problen before, so a new one for me!

Most of the time they only chew tails/manes to get the vitamins/minerals from them.

Get a red rocky block and put it in the field with them and a mineral lick in the stable too possibly.

I would refrain personally from putting anything harmful on the manes and tails, as it not only damages the hair...but if the foal is lacking in minerals then it can still chew the hair [even with it on if it needs it bad enough] and it doesn't solve the mineral deficiency.

I can sympathise though....our lot ate their mineral lick down and broke the last of it which I didn't realise and was away....came back to find all 3 colts completely bald of a mane and tail, with one colt still in full hairy glory!
