tail pulling help and tips please?!

any help or tips appreciated!!

ive made a start and used one of those silver tail pulling metal thingies that you drag along and it cuts the hair.

ive done the sides still a bit to do and need to do the middle.

my pony hates me pulling it she will only let me do 5 mins at a time so i keep giving up!!

help?!?!!? anything else i can use? can i just trim it with scissors or will that look terrible?

The middle bit stays long with the short sides giving it the shape.

For horses that hate having their tail pulled I use a combination of thinning scissors and traditional pulling (with oil of cloves rubbed in to numb, and done when they're hot and tired). Only do the sides, if there is very long hair in the middle, you can shorten it very discretely. Bandaging afterwards and before a show helps it to lie flat.

I pull tails wearing marigold gloves, they help to give grip. I pull the tail after exercise when the pores of the skin are open - the hair comes out more easily and it is less painful. Keep your horse occupied with a haynet. Do a little at a time, and yes the sides are the important bit to get hte shape right. I would not trim with scissors it could well end up looking very spiky. If your horse really hates it you may have to pull the tail over the stable door (standing on a bale of straw or something similar). For some reason my horse loves having his tail pulled. It relaxes him.

this is how it is looking so far, i have some more to do from the sides must admit i have trimmed it carefully with scissors and its looks ok....

I brought a thing from clipper sharp after a recommendation on here- I used it last night and I have to say I am well and truely amazed!! I did the whole thing in under 10 minutes- it looks great. Can't believe I did'nt buy one sooner!! Wish I had before and after photos to show!!

Yeh, my one from clippersharp is excellent.
Vicki, i think you need to carry on doing a bit more more and go further down the sides of the tail. Dont comb it down the middle as you want the top hairs to lie flat. If the tail is really thick, you can lift up the top hairs and thin it from underneath. But be careful as you dont want to end up with spikey bits!
