Hey all my gawgus mare rubs her Tail all the time... to the extent she has bearly any left, she hasnt got sweatich or any other skin condition... she has no cuts or sores that may make her rub it, she dosnt have mites or lice or any other kind of nasties, she is wormer in accordance with our worming program.... Has any one got any sugestions as to why she might do this also how i can stop her, i have tried tail bandages but she gets them off....

She went from having a huge full tail into a rats tail and its not good, i hoped the fact she is now rugged up might of stopped her but nope......

Help! xx:)

Could she be too hot? How about pin worms? They are the type most likely to be resistant to worming, so even if your worming schedule is up to date it could still be a possibility. How is her health and skin health in general? If she has a tendency to dry skin then a couple of good grooms a week, and some micoionized linseed in her feed should help her.

Hey thanx for the reply, ive seen pin worm in other horses and from the examples i have seen it makes the area quite sore with hair lose due to severe itching , i really dont think its pin worm i check her everyday , but i will give the micoionized linseed a go in her feed :) she dosnt have dry skin and is groomed at least 3 times a week in the winter months even more in the summer , thanx so much for the post will give the linseed a go xx

We had one that did this, whatever the time of year. We managed it by washing his tail once a week in the summer and a bit less in the winter but basically as soon as he started to rub the shampoo came out. When he went out on loan they had to do the same (at all 3 loan homes) so I'm pretty sure it wasn't anything environmental either.
