It's coming into showing season again and although coblet's tail is looking god as I've kept it bagged all winter and washed it regularly, we've stilled got quite a bit of staining going on at the bottom.

I've been washing it each week with Supreme's stain removing shampooing, and although I *think* it's making a difference, it's not enough lol.

I have tried a number of things, including net curtain whitener, diamond white shampoo, fairy liquid, whitening dentures tables and hibiscrub, but unfortunately the ingrained stains are still there.

Can anyone suggest anything I can put on it a leave for a while or something really good at cleaning up the tail? I know I may be fighting a losing battle and might just have to wait for it to grow out. Also, those that use net curtain whitener, which brand do you use?

I've also heard soap flakes are good but can't seem to get them from the supermarket, can anyone recommend where to get them and also if they're any good?

Thanks muchly peeps, homemade choc and vanilla sponge cake topped with melted Terry's chocolate orange (currently sat in my kitchen hehe!)

Have you tried cowboy magic shine in yellow out? I don't know if you can get it where you are, but it's literally like magic, takes off about 90% of stains.

If not, I've used toner (manic panic virgin snow) as a last resort on stained tails before, it's used on bleached human hair to hide the yellow undertones. When we used it it was on a really bad stain, about the last 10 inches of tail, so we followed the instructions to apply it, then left the toner on in a tail bag for a couple of hours (checking it obviously!)

I'd do a test first on a little bit though just in case - it shouldn't have any bad effects though, as it's an all natural dye.

The only thing I've used that has properly worked is Vanish Oxy-action spray! Before that I had tried pretty much the same as you plus swarfega, vinegar, bicarbonate of soda... the list goes on :p.
I just sprayed loads on the stained bits, worked it in for about 5 minutes, left it for another 5/10 minutes and really thoroughly rinsed. It worked really well and have had no bad side effects. Since then I've just been washing his tail once a week with value shampoo from tescos and it's stayed lovely and clean :D

Used to use Ace bleach on my palomino's tail... NOWHERE near the dock obviously, but the lower part of her tail did tend to be orange, and it worked a treat.

I only did this before a show as the next bit got expensive - posh human hair conditioner (i forget the brand but it came in a squeezy tube and was lots of money :p) and I used a tube each time. It was a nice moisturising one specially for blonde hair :D

silver highlights stain remover in a mug of warm water - wash in and leave overnight. remembet to wash out before you go to a show though unless you like purple tails!

Grannys soap flakes....... can get them from some super markets or small shops. Few in a bucket of warm water and hey presto! (used them for years and the cheapest and best, just make sure you rinse out properly).....either that or Dolly Blue if you can find some!

Hi. I have an almost white Andalusian, and I tried all sorts to keep the yellowing away. I am not too sure using harsh chemicals found under the kitchen sink on my boy is a good idea, apart from the toxic ingredients found in them, they would almost certainly damage the hair! I found that Creightons sunshine blonde colour enhancing shampoo and conditioner worked really well. I could actually see the yellow coming off into the foam and his hocks, knees and tail looked really white afterwards. It is really cheap too, 99p for the shampoo and the same for the conditioner. Lidl's sell it, but you can also get it on the Creightons website for the same price. :D

I put a mix of ariel clothes wash with stain remover in a bucket and added some warm water - then added a couple of scoops of vanish and held the tail in it for about 5 minutes - my tail went from stained brown and awful (not been washed once all winter!!) to completley white in a few minutes! First time I had done that - had tried everything else like washing it with washing up liquid, all the whitening shampoos, swarfega etc etc and this is the only thing I have used that has worked :)

I use Sterident denture cleaning tablets in hot water, put about 8 tablets in the water and put tail in and give it a scrub (smells lovely and minty lol) leave it on for ten mins then i wash it out with a purple shampoo. Decathlon do a massive bottle of purple shampoo for greys and its cheap too.

Some fab suggestions, I will be trying all of them atleast once! Ariel and vanish, creightons shampoo, soap flakes and cowboy stain remover will be tested. I won't be trying bleach as he has a small streak of black in his tail and I don't want to ruin this.

Thanks all, as usual, you all rock :)
