After much uncertainty and debating, I purchased a tailgate guard this week, an expensive item and we are coming to the end of the good weather.

I am so pleased with it! Dog is so much safer, he cannot escape as the rear door goes up, and we can go for days out and leave him in the car for short periods if necessary! Do not know why I did not get one before.

Any tips for using them?
 
Where did you get it from? I've been debating getting one as pup is growing rapidly and a larger crate will not fit in the car.

I just put tailgate guard in Google search, fantastic company, they keep many as stock item, they had sold out of ones for Freelanders so worked over the weekend and it still arrived within a week! They are Nottingham based so manufactured in this country.

Worth looking on agilitynet flea market & eBay (often have barjo) for 2nd hand tailgates & cages if you've a popular vehicle make. Do they fit so when you remove you don't have holes?

Think we may have to go for a crate as I fold back seats so can't fit guard to that.
 
It seems to depend on your make. of car whether you can permently fix or do a temporary fix.

On our Freelancer which we intend to keep for a long time OH has fixed with brackets supplied, so yes if removed there would be 4 small holes. BIL has similar guard but in his Suburau has been able to fix with ties to points in the car.

Just found added bonus this morning when my shopping fell over guard contained it instead of it falling out of the car as I raised rear door!
