I've been practising plaiting it and it just looks awful and has so many whispy bits at the side so I'm feeling I should pull, but I've not done it before so I'm worried I will do it badly!

i havent pulled before but did a tail using a thining rake down the sides with good effect. it was scarey at 1st to see the hair falling away but i had a good neat job.

anything to help us battle this mud is welcome.

Ours have their tails up - sewn up (I hate electrical tape!)

It might not be 100% correct but it's much more pleasant for them not to have a soggy tail slapping their legs all day or a soggy wet tail dripping down their legs all night!

Also, re the wispy bits mentioned above - either use hairspray/gel or just damp the hair slightly before you bandage.

Not sure what's correct, but I always plait and sew up to just a little longer than the dock. I'm not convinced about the balance theory and it certainly doesn't hinder Ginge's jumping ability.

We hunt some very wet and muddy country, and it's so nice to get home at the end of a long day and not have a ratty matted muddy tail to deal with. Hose legs, and cut tail down. Job done!

this! ^^

Plus Ron bucks if a wet and muddy tail gets between his back legs. He's got a shed load of tail though....

I would say the Polo Knot (How polo ponies have there tail done up) but just remember to put white tape if you have a grey and black if you have a black tailed horse - It's not very smart to see white/grey tail with green or black tape in it :p

sorry, must have missed something... "most correct" for what?

For me, for competitions; dressage and SJ, I plait. It looks best imho and really don't like the look of a pulled tail with a plaited mane.

I have always had a free tail for XC but will give a polo knot a go next time I think. that mud knot also looks like a good idea for turnout and muddy hacking but tbh, my mare's free tail doesnt get too bad at the moment

ETA: Also depends on what breed your neddy is :) Andalusian tail plait is an art in itself!

I have a friend who would die if she was not "correct" and is SO snooty about "tied-up tails". Don't know why. She is also snooty about coloured horses. Also don't know why. So perhaps among the die hard sticklers tied up tails may not be considered "correct". However, we all know that that is a fluid term; I think as long as you are tidy, whatever works for you is fine. I have a grey, and I don't bother plaiting and tying up his tail as it only takes a minute when I am washing down his legs to do his tail too. Less time than it would take me to plait it and tape it up!

I do a field knot the night before so her tail doesn't get too dirty and then either leave it free and flowing or do a polo style knot. If Mum's coming with me I'll sometimes get her to plait it properly because her plaits are a LOT neater than mine!:L Although, I'm a child and Lace is a field kept pony, so our hunt is less strict and do understand that not all the ponies are in at night!
