I seem to not be able to use polls so will try again as I can't edit my previous poll

I had a random thought when I was walking Ruby this morning, I put her collar on everytime she leaves the house - which is either for a walk or if I am taking her somewhere with me but I always take it off when she is at the yard (secure and if I don't take it off the other dogs will, they will then eat it ). She never has it on in the house but my friends dog never has her collar taken off so I just wondered what you all do?

I tried to edit but it would only let me edit the paragraph before the poll nto the poll itself but I was 100% sure that I double checked I had chosen the right time

Damn all modern technology - horses and carts and carrier pigeons were so much simpler

I feel your technological pain!

PS my answer is 24/7

None of mine wear collars, ever.

The labradors are walked on slip leads (in fact, they are rarely on leads!) and the Beastie wears a check chain and lead for walks.

There is nothing I hate more than seeing dogs wearing collars 24/7

Half the time they're not fitted properly and I imagine they must be very uncomfortable.

Collar more or less 24/7 to carry the legally required tag with name and telephone number (+ vets' number). Only removed to be washed when particularly minging...

Barney escaped from a seemingly secure garden once (we still don't know how!) and Henry has tried it on a couple of times too... he is chipped but I would never just rely on this. In any case we rarely spend much time in the house as he comes everywhere with me

so there's not much point in taking it off just for the sake of a couple of hours.

His collar does fit and is soft and padded.

Collars 24/7, If mine escape I want them to get back to me sharp, and if they are tagged people usually take them straight to the vets, esp as mine has I am cipped, my number and the vets, otherwise people tend to think them more as an ownerless stray and leave them roaming.
I also don' think dogs look very nice without collars

strange little thing I have going on there..........my sisters never have collars on...and they look awful

Otto wears his when he leaves the house.
Mainly as he was a little sod for running around like a headless chicken and despite never running off, I didn't trust him. It also gave me something to dive on as he went past

He will not wear a collar if he ever manages to become a working dog though, mainly because my Mum would disown me if I let him out the car at a shoot with a collar on, it's bad enough that he hunts cover on a walk with one on.

24/7. My 2 when they were pups escaped from the garden so I ran out looking for them, by the time I came to check if they were back my neighbor had found them and put them back in the garden. They only knew they were mine as the tag on their collar has our address on.

Daisy wears hes 24/7 as what if she escaped? She does have a different collar for at grannies house with there tel no's on, just incase lol

Mine wear their collars 24/7. No tags as I have yet to find a way of keeping them on when they go in the bush, losing proof of rabies shots gets you in BIG trouble here. Details are stamped onto the leather instead.

If I take the collars off they get very agitated, all of them. When not out with us, they live in a yard and dog room between the garage and the house, everybody enters the house past through that, no good having guard dogs that you can't restrain easily if needs be.

One of the dogs also wears an electronic sensor collar for the invisible fence during the day.

24/7 for Popple. Although, I agree with Hen, when she goes bush beating she'll have it off. (Used to do the same with Puppy).

I have ticked other. Mine wear collars with tags all the time except when working or in the show ring when they get taken off and put in my pocket, I then put straight back on afterwards.

Ditto that ... all working so collars would just be dangerous, be hung up in a bush/tree/fence somewhere within minutes.

I have a slip lead i carry in my pocket but never really use it. maybe a bit in the summer when doing a bit of refresher training

ALWAYS on, as its illegal for them to leave your private property without a tag with a phone number on it. xxx

I have heard this before - is this actually a law? When was it passed and could you give me a link please?

As GinaB says - there must be an exception for working dogs - can't imagine a pack of hounds wearing collars

[ QUOTE ]
Under the Control of Dogs Order 1992, every dog while on a public highway or in a public place, shall wear a collar with the name and address of the owner inscribed on the collar or on a plate or badge attached to it.

Exceptions to this requirement are:

A pack of Hounds
Dogs used for sporting purposes
Dogs used for driving/tending cattle/sheep
Dogs on official duty with HM Forces, Customs & Excise or Police
Dogs on emergency rescue work
Dogs registered as Guide dogs for the Blind.

When in contravention of these requirements, an owner of a dog and any person in charge of it, and any person allowing the dog to be on the highway or place of public resort shall each be guilty of an offence.

Flynn and Toby are used for Sporting Purposes so are exempt

Otto's jingly collar serves as an early warning system for when he thunders up behind you, otherwise he tends to crash through your legs and take you out
