On Monday the inevitable happened and I had my first fall off my youngster! Ended up concussed and a bit battered, but the main injury was whiplash to my neck. I am taking ibuprofen for the pain, but I was wondering whether anyone has had a similar injury and had success with any other types of treatment?

Ouch! Hope you're ok. I had a similar fall 7 years ago now. Lots of ibuprofen, keep your neck warm, do the neck exercises the hospital give you religiously even though they hurt like crazy, and if you can a sports massage will help a lot!

I had it when i had a car accident, doctor prescribed Valium which i was a little worried about but it relaxed the muscles brilliantly

A combination of co codamol and ibruprofen helped when the valium ran out, one tablet of each - no more

Yes, I got whiplash 7 years ago after falling off. I didn't realise until I woke up some weeks later and couldn't lift my head off the pillow, I had to roll out of bed my neck was so weak.
I was referred for physio and as somebody up thread said, the exercises do work but you must do them!
I still do them now on occasion if I can feel it isn't right and they do certainly straighten me out again.
Sadly, I think I will suffer for life from that fall :(

I had whiplash after being double barrelled. What helped at lot at the beginning was a neck brace, muscle relaxants and at night time roll up (like a sausage) a small towel and sleep with it under your neck. The towel under your neck at night time really helped me, I also used this trick after I had a bad car accident and my physio told me to do it.

I know this is an old thread but I am resuscitating it... I had a bad fall a few days ago and I think I have ended up with whiplash or at the least a very sore and stiff neck (I dont know you really define whiplash).... I have had a headache but certainly wasn't knocked out or concussed so haven't sought any treatment. Have been taking painkillers and using a heated neck thingy. I'm sure this is not uncommon, so wondered what else people found useful. It isn't stopping me doing the yard jobs but sitting in front of the computer is a pain (literally).

Can only advise to keep your neck as warm as possible and try to relax the muscles rather than flexing and exercising them. Like you I had a fall last year and head was jerked sideways with the impact and it took ages to get rid of the shooting pains up the side of my head. Hope you feel better soon x

I had whip lash after a nasty fall (concussed, temporary memory loss, overnight hospital stay.) I was very stiff and sore for 3 months, but a single treatment from a McTimoney chiropractor released the tension and made me far more comfortable.

I had seen her soon after the fall, but a complicating factor was that I turned out to be pregnant. She advised delaying treatment until the pregnancy was over 12 weeks (slightly elevated risk of miscarriage). I struggled on with the whiplash until she could treat me, and the improvement was miraculous! All she seemed to do was flick her fingers at my neck, dunno how it works, but work it did.

Take care, and I hope you get sorted soon.

hope you feel better soon. whiplash is very common from riding falls, and not recognised enough. i had it from my fall two months go

hi i wont be much help with the treatment at the moment but what your doing is all you can do while its very sore. once its abit better go to a physio or a chiropractor but make sure its some1 who will xray you before they touch you.
i suffered from daily headaches and an ache from the back of my ear down into my shoulder for a couple of years after a fall, i also used to feel like my head was too heavy for my neck and even if i got only a simple fall or knock i would have a sore neck for a few days and any bad fall would always hurt it. after two years suffering i eventually saw a chiropractor and she told me i had very bad whiplash which she normally sees in ppl involved in bad car accidents. i had to see her alot before it felt any way better but it took so long because i left it so long without doing something about it.
so what im trying to say is def get some physio, dont just leave it it will come back to haunt u.. alot of headache can be caused by damaged or tight muscles in your neck.
most horsey people are USELESS at looking after themselves so make sure you see someone as soon as you can bare it.wait until the pain has eased abit . good luck

Ouch, you poor thing, I got whiplash last year after bit of a nasty fall when pony I had on trial took off in a panicky flat gallop and I ended up out the side door as went round a corner (I had lost a stirrup over a jump and this unbalanced me which pony got panicked about I think, it was a youngish, greenish little thing). Fall happened at speed and force so when hit head jerked neck I think.

Ibuprofen helped and I actual had some difene from a previous injury so that was great, they are just a bit stronger. Also just taking it easy for a bit (yes us horse people bad at this).

Do go to dr for a check up if you are worried or still in pain after few days.

I only didn't with this as had had similar whiplash from a car accident so just did same as did for that and was alright luckily.

Second what fonax says :) most of my damage was to my shoulder but once the initial trauma eased I had acupuncture which included her working on my neck. Don't ignore it once the initial stiffness and pain eases.
Hope the hot wheat lacks are working their magic. If you can sit or lie in a position where your head is totally supported and then concentrate on relaxing your neck and shoulders. But Don't Try Stretching :)

Thank you everyone. Sounds like sore necks and riding go hand in hand lol. I am managing fine with painkillers and the wheaty sack. And chocolate ☺
If not better in a week I shall go see my chiro.

When in doubt, get thee to a gp/a&e/physio. I badly whiplashed my neck falling down the stairs over a decade ago and it's still not right. I did gp, xray etc at the time, but if I'd been more proactive on the physio front then I may have better movement now. If there's a long nhs waiting list private physios charge about the same as good instructors - and you won't be spending on lessons while your neck hurts.

Ouch sideways, that sounds painful. I honestly don't think I have done any proper damage but am just sore.

Showpony even the promise of a jacuzzi isn't going to get me near a gym 😁
