Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone has attended Cardiff uni and have taken their horse? I've firmed it as my first choice so will hopefully be heading that way this year!

Is it madness to try and do? Having kept my horses at home all my life I've never been on a livery so are there any in that area that you'd recommend? Also is trying to do DIY whilst managing uni work madness or is it fairly do-able? And what sort prices would I be looking at for DIY/Part?

Thank you :D

It depends what sort of facilities you're looking for/your budget/if you have your own transport.

I bought an untouched yearling just before moving down here for uni. I'm mad, however I don't think you are!

Just remember that your social life will go out the window. I often think I would've made more friends and obviously had more free time, had I not had the horses to worry about. In saying that, the horses have always been my life and I'm not the kind of person that needs to go out all the time.

If you'd like to message me, feel free.

I've been down here around 6 years and I have a fairly ok-ish knowledge of the areas surrounding Cardiff.

ETA: depending on the course, yes the workload can sometimes be very difficult. My course was extremely theory heavy and the constant assignments whilst having the horses to worry about was difficult at times.

Personally, if I was in your position, I'd look for a yard that has the option of full livery, should you want to go home to visit family for a few days/Christmas time etc and also, it may be beneficial to have someone who could do your horse for you a few days before deadline day. I shouldn't say that! No, no, no; because you're going to be a good student and not fall into the trap of rushing to finish everything 24-48 hours before and not even having time to sleep! ;)

Just to add- the yard I was on, originally, didn't have a full livery service so I found I was constantly having to creep for favours and it was awkward asking people to look after them all the time. Just a little tip to keep in mind.

Hi,

I bought a horse in my gap year but lived in Cardiff anyway. As above, it depends on your coursework.

There's plenty of yards although if you have no transport you'll be a bit stuck for choice. I'm paying £78 a month for manege, summer turn out and stabled at night in winter. It's the cheapest yard that I know of. Others average around £20-£25 per week for just stable and turn out. There's a facebook group called livery are us wales which might give you a better idea on pricing.

If you have any questions though feel free to send me a message!
