Is it possible to take my pony to university with me, vet school. And if so what roughly would the costs be for different UK universitys. I wouldn't mind him being used for demos ect. but he is really to small to ride at only 12hh. Or would I be better just leaving him at home

A lot of people have their horses with them here at Nottingham Trent, and I think their livery is roughly 40 per week (inc bedding/shavings/wormer) DIY.
I am considering buying and bringing one and two of my friends are interested in sharing him/her to make it much easier on us all but so we can still ride and have a horse to look after.
 
Someone at my yard is at uni and her horse will go back home with her this june when she ends university. She does say though it is a big committment to have alongside your uni work and social life
 
I would think the main problem is if you are at Uni a long way from home and still go home for the holidays, is it fair to transport your horse long distances 6 times a year and expect it to settle in 2 different locations? Or would you keep it on livery at your Uni location and be away from the horse in the holidays? That seems illogical.

My daughter is also hoping to go to vet uni this year, or the following if she takes a gap year, and she has accepted her eventer that she has brought on will have to be sold, as she couldn't give it the time it needs. I will continue to look after our other horse at home so it will still be here for her in the holidays.

I know that for some people it can work keeping their horse at uni though, so I wouldn't say what's wrong or right, this is just how we plan to approach things.
 
As to traverling long distances, well it would be a maybe 40minute drive, and he is up near the area sometimes on loan to friends. Settling shouldnt be a problem he seems to get on well with such situations as long as he has food

Lucky you! Are you going to Glasgow or Edinburgh? You're lucky with 2 vet unis up there. There are none near us, so taking a horse to uni is a bit of a nonstarter

i live 300 ish miles from home i grew up in kent and i live in manchester/salford

i took my horse with me but im not a normal student i genrally LIVE here now i only go home for visits

my horse is here 24/7 365 and i have to work part time allong side my studdies to pay for her me my car and our horsebox!!

it isnt easy my mum helps out with my credit card

but if i diddnt ride i couldnt see the point, i can no way afford to go out drinking all the time!!

it costs me around £45 a week for rent haylage and A bag of shavings (just 1 bag) its V much more expensive than down south

and that doesnt include shoes £10 a week and of course feed.... and every time i do go home it costs me £4 a day for livery (but only in winter)

but id rater spend £50-£60 a week (possibly an understatement id hate to really add it all up but then i am lucky my student loan bought me a horsebox ha) on my mate mildred than beer and clothes!!!!!

because i loves her lol and as all horseowners are im a bit insane no one can understand why i put so much time and money in

and dont forget your up at 6 to see to horsie before uni and no drinkie poos at lunch you've got to feed pony!
 
I have a quick question - how does everyone afford their horses at uni? When I went, tuition fees weren't half what they are now and I was working 30 hours a week without my horse

I was absolutely gutted I had to sell her before I went but there's no way on earth I could have afforded to take her with me

I took mine to uni with me, actually kept it at the vet school. Livery was £35 a week and you had to pay for holidays but for absoutely terrible management and facilities were good but still not as good as advertised, I had handed in my notice after two weeks, wish I had kept her somewhere else, it actually cost me a lot more as I was having to buy my own haylage even though it is included in the cost because the bags were always punctured and it was mouldy!
 
I chose to go to a crap local university (an hour's drive away) so I could still keep my horse at her existing yard

I also moved into a privately rented little cottage with my boyfriend just 5 minutes drive away from her. It costs me every penny I have, when I'm not attending a lecture or looking after B I am working my behind off in a local pub, and the two hour drive four days a week is horrible, but I wouldn't change it for the world.

People try to convince me that I'm missing out by not living in halls, but that's not the kind of lifestyle I would enjoy.
 
Personally speaking, as a vet student, I wouldn't want to have taken a horse with me at the beginning. Apart from the volume of work vets have to do, initially you will want to get out there and do the socialising. I thought I wouldn't want to (being quite shy) but when you get there you will. Given that your pony can stay at home (ie doesn't have to be sold if you don't take him), I would leave him there for now- I think initially it's better to get to know the people in your hall and to make friends, you can decide whether you want the commitment of looking after your pony later.
