Hi I have a property and land in Southern Italy, would my mid weight cob be ok to take there, grazing on land is perfect for her but, I am concerned about the heat as temp can go up to 40, this will determine whether I go to live there or not, has anyone had experience of taking a cob to a hot country ?

Hello and welcome to the forum!

I can't help you with your question, though as a human I'd hate to live in a country where the temps are regularly over 40C there are plenty who do - I'd presume the same goes for horses, but perhaps there is something in cob physiology which would make them very unsuited to coping with extreme heat (as opposed to other horse breeds which can cope). Maybe ask a vet?

It is a good idea to post this question in a section of the forum which more people visit, like the tack room. I'd be interested to see replies too!

I guess with decent shelter from the sun and plenty of water they may be ok? Why don't you contact a local livery/trail centre and ask how their horses cope?

Maybe take the cob over in the cooler months, as going from the UK to to 40 degrees would a bit of a shock, allowing to aclimatise slowly?

Hello! Yes I took a cob to Italy many years ago, I took her there in the October and she never had any problems with adjusting. We were in an area where it was 35-40 most of the summer. She was kept in a cool shelter of a day and out of a night, riding in early morning or late evening in summer. The only problem we had was for the flies she rubbed herself raw the first summer, she seemed to be allergic (not like sweet itch but the large biting stable flies). She wasn’t overly hairy so was not clipped in summer but my friends cob gets too hot in the uk summer so she clips him out all year round so I suppose it depends on the horse. The horse will adjust the same way people do :) the great thing was - not so much worry about lami as no grass and her hooves were fantastic, absolutely no need for shoes. I’ve since moved back to the UK but she is still loving life in Italy lucky mare!
