Not personally but there is someone on our yard who has her competition horse with her at Uni and brings it back to us in the hols. So people definitely do. The problem is - I would have thought - making sure you have the correct livery arrangements in both places. I think the lass in question keeps her horse at her trainers yard - she events I think - whilst at Uni. Hevan knows what it costs to keep the box etc available to you during term time / hols as applicable. I suspect it is far easier if you're doing an equine type degree!
Yep i have mine at uni at the moment! Not doing an equine degree. I keep it a a yard 4 miles away on part livery now, but was coping fine on completley DIY (no help - am a bit of a control freak, only moved for better facilities!). It just meant getting up at 6am every day (so if i went out the night before i often did the horse then went to bed) and later evenings. On old yard i could pay everything (incl feed and bedding/haylage etc) for £100 if i never had any help with him, i also have a sharer who does him 2X a week and that helps with finances/time. I wouldnt be at uni without him though, he keeps me sane and living in the real world as well as all the uni things. I still compete him, either by hiring a 2 horse 3.5t box (fits the lanky beast fine and hes 17hh!) with friends who are also a students or getting a lift with anyone else that is going out off my yard! It works amazingly
My OH does him 2 days a week, I do him 3, and we share weekends. The yard is about 8 miles from uni. We go up once a day to muck out & turnout, ad the yard bring him in.
I keep him on the yard the equestrian society use.
I have my girl at uni, and although I wouldn't be without her, it is a LOT of work. She is 4 miles away and there is no bus, which means I have to cylce/run there and back which can be knackering and takes a lot of time away from uni work (oh well! ) It is also quite expensive to do as you (or certainly I) have the costs of hiring a box to transport her there and back every holiday, and also to pay the retainers to relevant yards when she's not there. As I say I wouldn't be without her, but it isn't a cheap option and you've either got to have lovely parent who will pay (unlike me
Thanks! Im jutwondering if i could put her at grass, only problem being i imagine is getting there, as i dont think you can have a car in halls usually, plusa car would b more expense to run :S I have her on loan, and i imagin she may be sold when she goes back, and i desperatly want to keep hold of her or possibly have her back after uni but the chances of keeping in contact is slim!
Im in a similar situation - im going to uni in october but I'm not allowed a car, and there are no yards on bus routes nearby. I can't bear to leave my boy at home though....
For the first year of uni I kept him on 5 day livery back home and went back at weekends, my cousin rode during the week. Now he's here with me, in a rented field, 20 mins drive away.
The main thing is having to work (I do 10 hours a week now but was doing 30 hours on top of uni work and lectures) and having time to see your horse, do uni work and have a social life.
It of course can be done but hard work and you have to make sacrifices.
I don't take him back during holidays so have to organise help for him if I want to go home.
Im in a similar situtation aswell.
I do have a car although am not planning on getting a job when I go in sept - apparently the course is pretty intense and a year shorter that at other uni so more to do
I was thinking of putting mine on loan for a year and hopefully move him in second year if all goes well
