My new years resolution is to get my license so i can drive the horse box.
Got a feeling its going to be costly!!

So, i have worked out that i first need to apply for my provisional license - just wondering though, will i be able to drive on the motorways with L plates? I know you cant with a provisional car license, but wondered if it may be different with the LGV? Probably easier to drive on motorways rather than small roads!

Yes you can drive on motorways with L plates on an LGV, so don't worry about that, and yes, is MUCH easier on m-ways, lol! You'll need a medical too don't forget, but am sure you'll be fine, good luck!

Firstly you need to be 21 to drive a lgv and you will need your cat c1 licence which is about £800. The best one to go for is a cat c licence as this will let you drive any cat c vehicle.

Hope this helps.

Snap on the new years resolution.. i want to get my HGV, and also have that feeling that's it's going to be VERY costly

When are you taking yours?

Oh blimey.....no idea when i will take it, havent even managed to get my medical done yet!!! Have been faffing around booking it up as my GP is very expensive and wants over £100 for the fee! So currently shopping around for a cheaper doctor. Ideally would like to make sure i get the license this year....just dont know where to start!

Good luck with yours!

Wrong, you used to have to be 21 to drive an HGV, but there are even ways round that now, therefore on certain government schemes you can start driving even an HGV when you're 18.

I stand corrected i thought it was 21 for lgv and hgv. I'm hopefully goin to do my HGV Class 2 this year. Dont think i will ever need my class 2 i dont intend driving artics lol

Artics are class 1

but no, you don't get many horseboxes that are artics!!
but still, a good skill to have.
not that i'm going to get mine, just my class 2 like you.

It is very pricey....and you have to jump through the most ridiculous number of (metaphorical!) hoops...
You need to be 21 to start with.
Then you need to get all the forms and fill them in to apply for your provisional
Take them to a doctor to get your medical, very thorough, takes about an hour and costs a few quid!
If you pass that (shouldn't be a problem if you are reasonably healthy), you send off your form.
Then provisional licence turns up, and you can book theory and hazard perception test
Once you have passed those you can do your test, but think most people book an intensive driving course with the test at the end.
Takes ages!!
I have just passed my theory and hazards thingy last week and managed to get in on a cancellation at the driving school for week of 15th jan, so hopefully will have it all done by end of Jan.
Just seems so long winded! But I'll get there in the end, lorry sitting there looking at me waiting to go somewhere!
Good luck to the rest of you!

ps theory test is a bit trickier than the one for car test, stuff about lorry maintainance and driving hour regulations and all sorts! Plus now I bought the dvd and book for the theory test, and now I've done it I'll have to put it on ebay or something...it is all just such a hassle!

Also C1 you only have to be 18.
I got my medical done with a doctor the driver training place recommended, was much cheaper than my local doctor!

That may be but i would be interested to see how you would get on with the insurance!! And by the way, you can drive on a provisional but only if accompanied by a full license holder .
and before anyone asks yes i do have my HGVII and as far as i know if hattie only wants her lgv (thats up to 7.5 tonne) thats the one you can get round under 21, no reputable school would take you for the other under that age the insurance would be prohibitive!

Agree, re insurance etc. Doesn't LGV just mean Large Goods Vehicle though? Its the new terminology for HGV isn't it?
Its all funny now, like LGV category C1, LGV category C, LGV category D etc etc.
The 3.5t to 7.5t one is LGV category C1 I think? Know it is all very confusing as to what means what, and most people still refer to class 1 and 2!

In the eyes of the police LGV is Light Goods Vehicle
and in the eyes of the goverment LGV is Large Goods Vehicle.

Why they call different i dont know.

Well that's what i thought.. but because of the new law brought in in '97 about having to pass a test to drive anything over 3.5t, very few people are actually licenced to drive LGVs/HGVs (no one can be bothered to take it, like me)... so, there's now some new scheme brought in to encourage people to take the tests.. its free for people aged between 17 - 24yrs, i can't remember what it's called, but when i rang up about it, (back in the spring, i was 24, and thought i'd be able to do it free on this scheme) i was told by the company down here, that i was actually to old (to do it the free way) as they'd had so much interest, they were limiting it to under 21s... I was really shocked, to think of 17/18/19yr old kids getting their class1!!!
