Hi everyone!

I have just taken on a new yard which is slightly out of my normal area and has not been used for livery before. What I am wondering is if any of you have done the same thing and what did you find was the best way of promoting the business??

The yard is near Haverhill and has 16 acres, 10 stables a wonderful menage and lovely hacking so I am sure once people come and look they will like it! Just need some tips on other peoples experience of what works best! Any advice would be great!

Thank You

Take some good pictures of stables and facillities (in the sunshine preferably, LOL).

Then draw up a proper advert that can be put up in local tack shops, veterinary practice etc.

It sounds great

A website also, when I look for a yard I like to look online first....its so much easier than hoping theres a poster in a tack shop....however that is my second route of searching....also word of mouth is invaluable...make friends with the local tack shops...wont do any harm! and no bitching!

thank you. I am working on putting together a website as it is hard to put enough info on a standard advert! Hoping that will be online soon but may take a little bit longer. Has anyone had much success with putting a sign outside or could this not be the greatest idea? The road it is on is quite quiet (fab for horses not so fab for advertising) locals may notice which would be good?

Ad with photos in local tack shops, contact your local newspaper and ask if they'll do an editorial for you. Also a webiste and maybe an open day? Good luck

When i set up my yard, it was purpose built (previous owner had only ever had own horses and ostriches on!)
We plasted adverts all over the tack shops, local RC website, made sure my farrier knew so he could tell people!
We also put lots of listings on online directories which were all free. We did a freebie website and its amazing how much of a response we get from that.
What we did was show people around in groups of 2 or 3 phone call groups (most brought friends etc with them). We did it very informally, if they called to enquire, we just said well we are happy to show you around so you can see what we have etc, no obligations as we are already show someone else around at that time etc. I know we had other YOs sneak around, and those being just nosey but it got the word to spread.
It was still partly a building site when many looked around but at least they could see how the stables were being built

we gave everyone a copy of our price list when they looked around.

If you have a magazine that all over your local area, put an advert in there. We used farmers guardian a lot, but if Equi-ads, etc is around, maybe try them?

We found the main thing was making sure people knew where we were, what we had etc.

A few years later we held a show and even though it was 5 years ago now, we had someone down last week enquiring as they knew about us from the show we held.

I trust you are getting yourself organised with change of use if needed, business rates, insurance etc? (NFU are fab for yard insurance)

if you need any help of advice feel free to ask

Hi,

Try putting an ad on horsedates, or type into google 'livery yard' and see if any other sites come up that you feel are right for you to put an ad on. Good Luck with your new venture.
