Taking pictures of a horse I'm selling-what pics should I take?

Unfortunately due to my husbands health problems and financial pressures I am having to sell my lovely 8yr old.

Today I was going to take some pictures and videos of him to put on his advert. The pictures I was thinking of taking were:

A ridden picture and video
A jumping picture and video
A side on picture of him.

He used to hunt with his old owners and I still have a few pictures they sent me of him hunting when I first enquired about him. Is it worth asking them for permission to put them in the advert and say that he has hunted with his previous owners?

can anyone think of any pictures and videos that they think would be a good idea to put in his advert?

What are you selling him as? When I look at an advert, I like to see a photo of the horse doing the job it's being sold for, so if it's being sold as a happy hacker, I'd expect to see a picture of it hacking out. If it's being sold as as dressage horse, a photo of it doing dressage. And so on.

You can't go wrong with a decent side on conformation shot and if you're able to put video on an advert, a bit of everything could be included in there - walk, trot, canter, jump, maybe even a few seconds of hacking footage.

If you think the horse would be suitable for hunting, and the old owners are willing to let you use the photos they sent you, I'd pop one of those on too.

Have some extra photos to hand as people will always want more. Take a video of him trotting up in hand, one directly behind him, one directly in front, a head shot and a side on one from both sides :)


But for advert ones, yes, agree! :) Use the hunting one also.
 
I'm selling him as a riding club allrounder and he has been successful in all spheres. He has the talent to go further but with caring for my Husband I just have not had the time to register BD/BS/BE.

I think he will still be able to go hunting, the closet thing I did to hunting was xc and hunter trials and he loved it.

I will email the local tog to see if I can get permission to use a couple of her pics competing. I will also contact his hold owners regarding the use of their hunting pictures.

Good advice from Kaiserchief. Make sure the photos are clear, taken from the right angle ie straight on, side on, not looking down or anything and don't have anything in the background that messes the photo up if you can help it. I would put as many good pics on as the advert allows and yes the video should be comprehensive as possible. You can't put too much effort into it in my opinion, as a recent purchaser. The horse I finally bought there was one rubbish pic of her on the advert, it said more I could be sent so I asked for more and got directed to one very poor quality video. Luckily for the seller I took a chance on going to see her and bought her. The pics and video I took at the viewing are far superior to the ad!
 
My Sister has very kindly offered to take the pictures and videos on her dslr so the pictures and videos will be of good quality.

I have booked the school for 1pm so I am currently writing down a list of pictures to take.

If you are going to take a video make sure the transitions are included! I hate seeing a horse trotting and then cantering without a transition - makes me wonder why they haven't included it ;)
 
I will make sure the transitions are included in the video, that was something that annoyed me a fair bit when looking at horses for sale. Another thing that annoyed me was people putting flashes over the video just as the horse was about to jump so I won't be doing that either.

My sister used to ride as a child but she gave up 20 years ago so she has a basic idea of what to do. I will check the pictures though before we finnish just incase she has missed some things off.
 
Another good reason for contacting the old owners is that they may know a potential buyer. Worth finding out which hunt he hunted with and how often as if he was known within the hunt you could sell him via word of mouth that way.
