I need to replace my currentwater containers - they were cheapies off our ebay and are certainly not water tight - neither were the last lot which were more expensive.

I used to have a big, more robust one but I burst it and I actually found it too heavy especially when trying to pour from it on my own.

What does everyone else use/recommend? Also, where do you keep it? I put my containers in a large bucket (because they leak) in the back seat off the car. Was wondering if it is safe to travel it in the trailer (have hears horror stories about it affecting the balance of the trailer but doubt that a 10 litre water container could counter the balance of 1 or 2 coblets.

I've also seen some people who have modified their trailer so that the container fits over the back wheel arch - anyone done this successfully?

I have a large container with a filler cap and a lower side tap fitted with a short piece of hose, mounted on a wooden platform fitted on the v frame between the front of the trailer and the handbrake. Held on by a ratchet strap.

I have two 5litre containers I bought from a camping shop a few years ago. I either store them upright in my boot, or lay them down in the front of my trailer, they have never moved during travel.

Not for shows but if I need to transport water I just fill loads of 2 litre drinks bottles! Handy and free! You can take one under each arm whenever you go back and forth, saving the back breaking struggle with huge leaking containers, and I find them quite handy for a hot sweaty horse in summer too, my old chap used to like grabbing them and throwing the water about! I just pop them in every nook and cranny in the car, there's usually one under the seat when I'm dying of thirst after a long hack :-)

Like trottingon I bought 2 large containers from a camping shop but tbh my teensy mini shetlands very rarely want a drink so I keep old screen wash containers, well rinsed out, and take 1 of those inside the grooms bit of the lorry along with an empty bucket. I always offer a drink but usually end up throwing it out as I pack up for home!

We have to transport a lot of water. Now I've got older and more creaky I don't tend to fill the large 25 litre containers full as that way lies back problems. I do tend to take a lot of 5 litre containers, transported in plastic crates to stop spillage. These are mostly rinsed out soya oil containers that I've collected over the years, but my mum's cat litter comes in handy plastic 5 litre stackable containers so she collects them for me too.

I get the 5 litre square bottles of water from Tesco or Asda and they generally last for a season or two but even so it's not a bother as they are cheap and cheerful to replace.

I got mine from a local camping shop, 25litres, so rarely full!! before I had that, I had an 8 litre container from argos, which cllapsed flat when empty, so ideal for storage,

Thanks all - I've ordered a large container from Ebay. It's probably a bit big to travel in the car - was thinking about securing it inside the trailer using some bungee cords - would this be safe?

It's a 25 litre container so will be pretty heavy if full (although I doubt I'll ever need to fill it completely) - is there a risk that this could throw off the balance in the trailer?

Go to your local fish and chip shop and ask for used oil containers. 20 litres, lightweight, won't last forever but free!! I have used the same one for three years to take hot water to the yard in winter and defrost pipes.

I get my containers from my local vets (normal small animal practice) They have sterilised water in them for thier operations etc and when empty they just chuck them away. They are great and designed for the job, and best of all, free :-)
