Taking your dog abroad

No. You can leave the UK no problem but to re-enter your dog needs to be microchipped, have a passport and have up to date rabbies vaccination recorded in the passport. If this is his first rabbies vaccination he can travel after 21 days (I think, but it may be a slightly different period of time), subsequent boosters have to be done before the due date. 24/48 hours before travelling he has to visit a vet for flea/tick treatment which is also recorded in the passport.

As Booboos has said, he must have a passport, up-to-date vaccinations, microchip, plus a rabies jab one month before travelling. Then 24-48hrs before leaving (and re-entering I believe) he must have a flea/tick treatment and wormer administered and signed off by a vet.

Unless your dog already has a passport, then no it's not possible.
Some jabs need more than 1 neg result, ( I believe rabies is one).
I can't remember the time scale from beginning to end, but it's a long time
before you get their passport

He's microchipped and up to dte on vaccs, he just hasn't got the rabies or the passport.
How do we get him a passport? I know the vet can do rabies?

He might be able to come with us in April instead, bless him, he hates the kennels

flirtygerty: since 1st Jan 2012 you no longer need the blood tests so it is a much quicker process.

wewillshowthem: your vet issues the passport and does the rabbiies vac which he will not have if you have never travelled him before. The passport is required for the rabbies vac, the don't care about his other vaccinations. You should be able to ge it done in time for April though, just book an appointment with your vet now.

As booboos said, much easier now, has to be microchipped, rabies vaccine then good to go after 21 day providing it is within the EU, different rules do apply depending on certain coutries.
The old way you had to allow at least 6-8 months prior to travelling.
Take your own wormers and flea & tick treatment with you for the vet to apply on your return.
