Never taken my dogs camping before, but we are going to Well Next the Sea end of August, about 6/7 of us and taking the horses too ( Holkham beach yipee! )

Can anyone give me a list of things I will need apart from the obvious feed/water/bowls etc. and any tips health wise I should look out for and need to do before going.

Thanks, I think Polly will love it, she will be 9 months old (Cairn) and is quite well behaved! there will be my friends black lab Snoop too :) they will sleep in the lorry with me.

Ours have camped with us in a tent and in the caravan and things we've taken, other than the usual bowls and feed have been:

1. Tons of towels for drying off
2. Doggy first aid kit (same as horsey one really!)
3. Screw in stake for attaching dogs to
4. Plenty of water if the journey is long
5. Doggy poo bags
6. Number of local vet to where we are staying

Awww,your dog looks happy!

Thanks :) I'll put those on my lists, been looking at those stakes, the ones on ebay have only got 6ft of cable? Is that enough or can you buy longer ones. Will look in my local feed shop.

Looking forward to it now, weather permitting!

As above but we took our crate with us too.
I have 2 children and I wanted to make sure we had somewhere secure to put him when putting tent up/packing away etc.

He was meant to sleep overnight in it (in the tent) but it was so cold, my husband had him in his sleeping bag to act as a hot water bottle :)

The stake you screw into the ground is an absolute essential - we just got a cheap one from PaH that you hook the lead on to.

We always take a crate just in case it's needed but stan always ends up sleeping with us. He has to wear a coat at night when camping but he is a bit of a wimp anyway. Take plenty of towels so you don't end up with a wet dog in your tent.

Have you checked this is one of the beaches that allows dogs access - some of them are banned for certain months of the year ?

Have fun - my dogs loved camping with us.

Holkham beach allows dogs and horses all year :) this is why we go. No restrictions to the time either, its about 6 miles long and you cant gallop till your hearts content;

This will be my third year going with the ponies, but first with the dog!

Oh I picked up one of those stakes from Poundstretcher for £4.99 and its got about 16ft of cable too :)

Have a lovely time - I love camping with mine!

Nothing to add, think it's been covered but those stakes are essential when there is food about! :p

Definitely a stake - don't assume you can leave your dog zipped safely into the tent while you run to the loo, because if he's anything like Henry, he'll be able to open the zip and run riot:eek::mad: As indeed anyone who attended the same AAD bbq as I did will know, since Henry staged a dawn raid on every tent in turn:o:mad::D:D:D

One thing that is very useful - a windbreak. Helps you to get the stove lit in the morning for your cuppa! Also, a Hotterdog / Equifleece-type jumper helps to minimalise the amount of wetness your dog can scatter around the tent after rain or swimming. Also - a tick hook, you don't want the little blighters getting into the tent :)

I'll be in my horsebox ( slightly more luxurious lol ) I have quite a good sized living with loo/stove/sink table and benches ( very civilised ) so if the dogs get wet they will be put in the horse area which will have tons of straw in :)

Good idea re the tick hook didn't think of that

great interesting post as I'm doing exactly the same at the end of this month! :D
Numbers will be 2 horses, 3 dogs and 3 people. So cant wait just praying for a little bit of sunshine!!

I love camping with my dogs! They are great hot water bottles. Can't really add anything to the lists already given except for a toy or something as your dog is still a pup.

:) I have to wait until end of August and pray that it dries up!

There will be three ponies, 2 horses, 2 dogs, 4 very typsy people, one moody teen and a pregnant lady that has to stay sober :D

Polly has a favourite toy, a squeeky yellow duck, a very good bribe tool if she wanders off too far being a typical terrier she does tend to chase things

Have a good time lottiepoony and Spudlet!

I went couple of months back and had a fab time. Me, pop up tent and a nutty choc lab.
Stake to tie them to
water bowls
food bowls
their bed
first aid kit
chewey things for when they are tied up
towels - lots
poo bags

Oh, I'm so jealous! Took the dog to holkham on holiday once, but haven't taken the horses yet. We regularly go out in the tent for the weekend with the dog (less this year though!) Agree with all the above, I always make sure I've got enough blankets for the dog, and coats, as she gets really cold (although a horsebox will be warmer) and I also take extra food, and split it so its kept in 2 different places, so if it gets wet/attacked by rodents/ found by the dog etc there's still some left! And I always take a spare collar with tag and a lead, a friends dog broke his collar on holiday once and it was a nightmare trying to find a new one quickly!
