My friend and I each have an elderly cob, and chewing hay/haylage is starting to become difficult. She feeds a hay replacer, I am looking at options. The cheapest grass replacers are coming in at around £13 for a 12kg bag, which will work out at six bags a week minimum. Does anyone use a chaff cutter to process their own fodder? And can it be used to chop haylage?
My cob has a history of EMS/COPD and having found a supply of haylage that covers both bases I am really nervous about changing his diet too drastically.

Years ago I worked on a yard that chopped their own chaff (2/3 hay, 1/3 straw). Haylage might not have chopped quite so well, being softer, but the main problem might be finding a chaff cutter these days. In time a soakable feed might be easier for your horse anyway, so it might be worth starting to investigate suitable options before you get to that point.

If you ask at a farm shop they may know of a agri feed company locally that can do this for you. You supply the hay / fodder and they will chop and bag it for you.
