I've loads of questions so will just ask them as I think of them!

Is palatability a real problem?

What form is it in - powder? pellets?

For those that feed it as the main hard feed how much do you feed daily in weight & roughly how much is that in a stubbs scoop?

Does it give enough energy for medium work levels if fed alongside EquiJewel or similar?

If you can think of anything else to enlighten me please tell me!

Thank you :)

Hi, I'm no expert but my horse has been on it for a couple of months now.

He has had the base feed, gut restore powder and gut restore liquid.

Debbie thought he may have ulcers as he is grumpy when you do his girth up and rugs, among other times.

He has now finished that and only has base feed at around half a dose -200gms, which is a powder, with about 200gms ish of grass nuts and a handful or 2 of grass chop (both from northern crop growers). The only other thing I add is salt.

He seems to be doing very well on it and he loves it but he did have a mineral based feed before moving on to this (linseed, brewers yeast, seaweed and Calmag). He has never had molasses since I have had him.

He has put a bit of weight on and is nicely covered, which he could do with.

It will be interesting to see how this compares to last year as I was feeding him loads (alfalfa) just to try to maintain his weight.

Hope that helps but feel free to ask anything else or PM me.

:)

Thank you WHWIndie, it's interesting how little you feed so I'm wondering if it will be enough for my poor doer TB during winter. She is also very fussy so the palatability is a real worry for me having been through most feeds etc on the market and knowing she takes a real dislike to 'healthy' options!

I will have to add some sort of mash to it to add her other supplements so that may help disguise it.

I also have a good doer cob and have just taken on a sweet itch mini so I'm looking for something that will suit them all that I can then add to for the TB, probably in the form of rice bran as we have had success with EquiJewel in the past.

I have emailed Thunderbrook but not had a response yet so will see what happens.

I used it with great success for an oldie. Fed the max amount for his size (150g) rcombined with a high fibre diet really kept the condition on him (sort of glossy like a seal if you know what I mean). He ate it no problem.

My mare thought she was being poisoned at first but I kept going and she got used to it.

Mine are on their second bag, after about 2 months. i introduced it gradually, as advised and mix it with readigrass (soaked). I noticed they love their salt licks with it and their mangers are thoroughly polished up, something my daughters very fussy primadonna has never done before.
16.2 warmblood and 15.2 tb are both on about 250 -300 gms, which is roughly a large heaped mug. The cob pony a bit less. Everything is well, calm and shiny and my farrier commented on faster hoof growth :)

Sorry, cat walked across the keyboard and hit the post button before I had finished!

I found it improved mobility in the old chap and gave him a new lease of life.

Don't even think about a stubs scoop :D think yoghurt pot twice a day max.
No other hard feed, just fibre.

I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

I used the gut restore for my mare and she ate that without comment but was advised not to feed it to my oldie as rather hard on the liver.

the phrase "talk to me" in a title .....where does that come from ?? Curious.

Uh oh shysmum you've just made me realise I'm turning into my MiL  She has done a basic counselling course & now all you get from her is "talk to me about....." or "how do you feel about that?". It must be catching!

Thank you for your replies RebelRebel and ozpoz, it sounds very interesting so I'll definitely contact Thunderbrook again if my email hasn't made it to them. I see from their website that you can buy a 10kg bag so that might be the way forward initially.

I would definitely call Debbie. I tried emailing twice and she didn't get either.

My horse was a poor doer last year, he was having so much feed and hay. This year he should have a lot less and he looks so much better already.

I will be ordering another bag when this one runs out.

Ive used it successfully for an underweight 16 yr old living out in -15 which it put weight on and improved her joints/feet and a rescue did v well on it.

It was however too rich for my good doer really :)
