Jasper has a mouth issue. He has a nasty smell to him, but it's not caused by his teeth.
Basically he needs a doggy facelift. The smell is caused a fold of skin that has formed on the lower lip as he's aged. Saliva gets trapped in the fold of skin causing a rancid smell and sort of "chapping/sore" to the skin.
Only "cure" is to remove a piece of skin and tighten the lower lip up on both sides to try and prevent a recurrence.
Jasper is 12 1/2 and has frequent seizures. They are classed as "pre-epileptic" episodes because he doesn't black out/go off his legs. He is however very distressed and has these seizures when stressed or off colour. Just leaving him in the house alone for an hour can trigger one. The older he gets, the more severe they seem to get and I'm worried about how they might develop. He never had seizures until he had a general at the age of two to sort out a nasty case of "wagtail" through partial amputation. He had seven seizures coming out of anaesthetic and it was touch and go they said. They thought he was just having a reaction, but the seizures have stayed with him all of his life.
So, vet says there are added risks to a dog like him having a GA and the lip problem isn't really "that serious", just unpleasant for us as we have to suffer the malodorous stench that it causes.
Would you risk the surgery or would you put up with the smell? The sore doesn't get any worse as we clean it daily, dry it and apply a barrier cream (as prescribed by vet).
Vet seemed to be suggesting not to bother as there was a chance the fold in the lip would return in a few months post op and old dogs smell anyway! I just don't know if I can stomach the smell for the next however many years he lives for.
