Tall Riders - which jumping saddle?

If you are tall, and particularly if you are long in the thigh, which jumping saddle do you have..?

My current saddle isn't the best fit for my horse - he is very compact and the saddle is very long (and too big for me!) but I am long in the thigh so find it difficult to find a saddle which keeps my lower leg in the correct place.

Any ideas?

I am 5ft 8 and have an Ideal Patriat jumping saddle... i honestly couldnt fault it, plenty of room and fits all my horses brilliantly!

I am 6 ft tall and have a long thigh. I personally use Frank Baines saddles, they just seem to fit me, they have a flat seat.

However I would think most of the top makers of saddles will custom fit the saddle flap to fit your leg. I think the decision you need to make when you find a saddle that suits your horse and you is price and whether you prefer the minimal feel of a saddle like mine or something like a butet which will hold you in place a bit more x

I'm 5'9 on a short backed horse, so have struggled to find a compromise which works for her and is big enough to take my legs!!

I have settled on the Albion k2 jump - which I love (which is good, as it was the only one we tried on which worked!!)

Several friends have them too and they are lovely to ride in - hugely comfortable and very secure. Guess it depends what type of saddle you like though, as they're not the close contact flat seated sort.

Good luck!

I am stupidly long from hip to knee and go off the front of every single saddle I have ever tried- I figure if it is good enough for Mark Todd, it is fine for me! :)

As long as the saddle doesn't have much in the way of blocks and a flat seat I am happy- the most comfortable saddle for me is the Pessoa as the knee roll is almost non-existent.

Hi I am 5'8 and very long through the thigh, on a very short backed horse, with a big shoulder. I have a butet xc saddle, which allows me to ride pretty short, without my knees coming off the front of the saddle. Before that i had an amerigo which was pretty good as well.

Im not ridiculously tall (5'8) but i know several people who are, that like me would really rate Butets. I couldnt afford a Butet so i have an Albion Kontact lite XC saddle which i also love, and obv Fox pitt uses them too.

Thanks all for the replies. Lots of options to try there. Money an issue though as could do with part ex-ing the one I have.

I have a Passier that I love and fits me very well - it's very forward cut and has small, high set thigh blocks. According to saddlers I am an annoying shape to fit and I've never met an "off the rack" saddle with knee rolls (vs blocks) that even comes close. I do find reasonably sized Butets almost always fit and a couple of the styles of Prestige (especially the Appaloosa, which I think they don't make anymore - the name always made me laugh!) fit me well. Albions generally don't fit me but they are usually big enough in the flap. Stubbens are usually okay as well, although I find they're aren't always the most helpful saddles, at least the older models aren't. I've ridden in a John Whitaker and liked it well enough to jump in it, although if I was getting one of my own I'd want an extended flap. A student of mine just got an Equipe, which has a generous flap but it's not very forward so I'm fine on the flat but not to jump. There are some older "mens" saddles I like - Parriani, the older Mark Todds, Tad Coffins, Crosby PDNs but you don't see them around much. All the Ideals I sat in were not great in the flap (although seemed to have long enough, flat enough seats so maybe would work with a custom flap. Ditto Black Countrys - most of them seem to have been "semi-custom" new, rather than stock models so it's hard to gauge what any given one will be like.

Have you sat in anything you did like? It's so tricky now because saddlers don't often have rooms of used saddles around anymore!

I have just been fitted with an ideal impala pro monoflap!

I'm 5ft 11" with very long hip to thigh and in perfect on it

It's super comfy and very secure

It also comes with a calfskin leather girth worth £120 and calfskin stirrup leathers

The saddle is also calfskin so very soft

It does absolute wonders for my leg position and my horse goes the best he ever has In it

Others I tried that fitted were -

Albion K2 jump - horse didn't go very well in it

Albion Kontact Lite - I didn't really like it!

Albion XC - horse didn't go as well

Ideal Impala - My leg was awful!

But all the above fitted me so any of those should fit!
