I've got a few shows planned with Larry his summer. Which of course means I need to plait him. Problem is he has such a mass of mane it's very hard to do! I tried a few weeks ago and they were like millions of golf balls! Sometimes I wonder if he is actually a TB or whether he's part New Forest (despite the fact he raced and is Wetherbys registered!).

This is the afro.

It just sticks up most of the time!

His crazy massive tail! I did not know Thoroughbreds could have so much tail!

Sorry, got a bit carried away with the pictures! I'm aiming to enter a novice riding horse class, maybe competition/sports horse in hand, ex racer classes, riding club horse and possibly a bit of jumping.

Start working on the mane by pulling it then plaiting it over, make sure you make it wet before plaiting so it holds firmer, leave for a few days then when you take them out pull some more, by doing it in stages you should be able to gauge how much thinner and shorter it needs to be to plait easily.
The tail just needs to be pulled at the top to give a better shape and looks as if it could have a few inches off the end also.
