Following on from the previous worming post, I was going to worm my new horse with Equitape. 2 questions - given I don't know the worming history is it as safe as something like a double dose of strongid?

The next one is on pasture management- it says horses should be kept in after worming, to protect the pasture from chemical contamination. So is it OK to put droppings on the muck heap after worming?

I hope someone knows - thank you

the Equitape should be fine although it might be wise to get your vet to take a bloodtest and check that the horse actually needs to be wormed at all.

What you do with the contaminated droppings really depends on how your muck heap is disposed of so thats something you need to check with your YO.

The muck heap is used as fertilizer on the fields - that's why I was wondering. But there will be a long time interval, so I don't know if the chemicals break down?

I would assume that they do but then if your muck heap is going to be made up of droppings from a lot of horses that have been wormed together it would take longer.

If its only yours thats being wormed I doubt it will make much difference.

Would you not be better to use Equest Pramox to cover all worms, including tapeworm? Encysted bots need dealing with at this time of year as well as encysted redworm.

Sorry if you have already covered that in a different thread by the way.

Yes i have just used equest pramox. Apparently it's no use doing bots before the first frost though, as they can continue to pick up more eggs until then. I've just had to look into all this as my yard had no programme! Also found some evidence of resistance to Strongid P incidentally.

We're using Pramox next week as have already had the first frosts here. Fort Dodge who manufacturer the Equest Pramox actually advised us to wait for the first frosts last year, so you are spot on! Have heard some bad things about Strongid P on other forums, but can't comment personally as have never used it.
