Morning , Doing worm count and also checking for tapeworm also , had horse 3 years wormed accordingly however is a colicky horse been worked up for ulcers ect and all
Clear , if for whatever reason he hasn't been wormed when with past owners as suspect he wasn't as had to restart vacs teeth ect then could we still have problems with tapeworm ? X

Agree with above the vet will need to take some blood to test for tapeworms, counts will also not check for bots or encysted worms (they live in the wall of the gut).

My compantion rescue pony - who almost certainly doesn't have a good worming history has clear counts 3 x a year then usually a massive count when the encysted ones burst out ! I've used Equest Paramox more than 10 times now in five years (it's supposed to shift them) but every spring we always have a silly count - as far as I know there is no test for encysted worms - unfortunately

Blood tests are the way to detect tapeworm. You should worm for them Autumn and Spring, the eggs can live on hay! Equitape wormer directs the meds directly at them. Besides Equest Pramox you can also use Equimax and Eqvalan Duo which are also combo wormers for tapes and the other types.

I don't usually wait to do blood tests I worm against tape worm as protocol. I use a general wormer and then use a tapeworm one as the general ones don't seem to protect against tape worm :(

My boy was quite bloated but skinny I posted a picture on here a few weeks back and was told to worm for tapeworm, I wormed him straight away and he is looking miles better, I am going to worm him again in a few weeks just to make sure everything has gone. I will post a before and after photo in a few weeks :)

However i would still worm for tapeworm which will cover everything else, then you know the horse is clear, tapeworm should be done twice a year anyway.

Hi thank you for your replies , prob didn't word my first post
Correctly , it was meant to say he has been wormed for tapeworm already but I was wandering if he has never had a good worming programme before I got him
3 years ago would that still have a impact on him
Now ?

Sorry but we don't do a test for tapeworm at Westgate Labs. As others have said you need a blood test, though if we see tapeworm eggs in samples we will of course report them. If you are relying on praziquantel for tapes treatment then it is a good idea to alternate with double pyrantel as there is some question of resistance to praziquantel.

Yes if he wasn't wormed in the past damage that has already been done can affect him now.
My late mare died of worm damage sustained when she was a youngster. Although I was religious with worming and field maintenance her digestive system had already been weakened, she reguarly got colic and eventually
died. The vet said she would never have seen old age (she was 9).
Such a crying shame.
