The YO did this with the pony I was riding during my last lesson.

Isn't this likely to confuse the poor pony? Or is it only me that thinks this?

Later in the lesson he started stopping; then, he was hard work to get moving again. He would just stand there and ignore the whip!

Any tips on how to ride him, if I ride him again? When he was moving he was really nice, but he would stop and then not move. Normally this was when he was asked to change the rein, etc.

Could the fact that he was a stallion have anything to do with it?

Stallions need to be ridden ina different way. You tell a gelding, ask a mare and discuss with a stallion

.

Where did she tap the pony?

When they're broken horses are taught to move away from the whip on the lunge. Hence why having a whip in your hand is often enough to motivate most horses. A whip also backs up your leg aids.

She tapped him on his shoulder, so maybe it shouldn't confuse him!

How do you discuss things with stallions? I'd never ridden on before. (So yes, it was probably my riding that was making him misbehave!)

Its all to do with there attitude to life. Geldings are a walk over and laid back. Mares are a bit more tempermental. and stallions HAVE attitude (although some dont) Stallions are top dog so need to be tactile when asking ...

A friend of mine to produces dressage horses and rides three stallions at the moment said that they are much easier than mares - there's food for thought!
