Our old lad is now on regular bute to help with arthritis.
He clearly doesn’t like the taste though-any top tips of what to add to disguise the taste a bit?

Syringe it with peppermint essence from the supermarket or try adding some drops of it to his feed might be enough to disguise it.

It has no added sugar so is better than feeding sugary things in my opinion, I have managed to get most things into my horses by using it.

Failing that buy danilon it's sweet rather than bitter like bute so most horses will eat it.

Mixing it with a big spoonful of apple sauce worked for mine. As others have said Danillon is more palatable but it is more expensive.

I use baby food and either syringe it in or mix with his feed - always have about 4 jars in my first aid box, variety of flavours. Anything banana or mango-related does well with mine, but having a variery of tastes also helps if it's for more than one dose.

eta: if syringing, the first bit of the syringe is full of just baby food and I spoon the mixed bit in after. It's fooled him so far.

My TB wouldn’t eat bute through the years but finally managed to get it in her feed when she needed it for her arthritis. She had a mix of spillers super senior mash that’s apple flavoured and ready mash. I think I added it bit at a time until I got the whole sachet in.

In bran with a few tasty cubes or similar and molasses dampened well but not too wet . Use just under a level scoop of bran the horse needs to be hungry enough to want to eat .
Always give it the horse when its hungry so at least an hour with nothing else to eat .

Mine is extremely fussy, and I tried adding various things to his feed, making yummy sandwiches all to no avail!
The only thing that works for me is sprinkling it on a horslyx (and sometimes adding more molasses on top if he’s suspicious!). This is even with the apple bute ?

Quite literally, a jam sandwich. 2 slices of white bread, lots of cheap strawberry jam smeared on one slice, pour on Bute sachet distributing it as evenly as you can, second slice of bread on top and then quarter it.

Always worked with my fussyTB.

Mine is eating his danilon with a bit of sugarbeet and soaked grass nuts. Won’t touch bite though. So I can confirm danilon being more palatable, and they now make it in 3G sachets instead of 10g (for the same amount of active ingredient) so less to mix in.

My mare is on daily bute and the only way I can get her to eat the bute is by mixing it in with a bit of aa banana. She loves banana and calls for it each morning.

Do not stir it into feed just put on top. Do not damp the bute as this brings out the bitter taste. Do not put onto a big feed as it will get eaten round. A handful of tasty feed with the bute in a pile on top, so that it is taken in the first mouthful works best.

Apple flavoured bute was left for one of mine.

Mints melted in boiling water and cooled and added to feed, treacle or molasses, mint cordial, mint leaves.
If you put too much stuff in he will know your disguising it. Thank God my last horse didn't care.

I mix mine with a drop of water and half a kids pot of custard, then in syringe.
Cob now grabs the syringe! It's thick enough to say in their mouth and not run out, but not thick enough for them to spit out.

Agree I’ve yet to find a horse that likes apple flavour bute.

I find feeding bute dry, mixed into micronised linseed and beetroot powder, then mixed well through feed.

If let danilon get wet before eaten the sugar coating dissolves and tastes nasty

There’s a pony at my yard who’s currently having his meds mixed with grass powder - it smells delicious and is apparently irresistible!
