Tasty alfalfa free chaff

Looking for a tasty alfalfa free chaff. Currently on just grass chaff, won't eat it now, won't eat honey chop. They will only be getting a small amount so the alfalfa might not affect them but hoping to find something alfalfa free? Thank you
 
You could try Dengie Meadow grass with Herbs, that's grass chaff with oil and some herbs to taste and is fairly palatable. Otherwise if you can get it, Agrobs do a good range of chaffs. I feed the Musli with sugar beet and Copra and Grasstatic to make it go further. I can skip any of the other ingredients but iif there's no musli, he picks in a very unenthusiastic way.
 
With the demise of Pure feeds which I fed in winter mine now have the Dengie Meadow grass mixed with a linseed mash but they were getting bit bored with the same thing so I now add a tiny handful of Readigrass which smells amazing and they love it. Clean bowls once again.
 
Why does it need to be a chaff? My boy doesn't like chaff unless covered in molasses!
If it's to get some supplements in , you could just use a bit of sugarbeet or Allen and Page Fast Fibre.
 
Grasstastic or pellets by emerald green are vastly better quality than many chaffs that pad-out with dubious quality straws and hays, hence the need for oils/flavouring/molasses coatings.

He was on grasstastic and grass nuts. He stopped eating it so I stopped the chaff. He was eating the grass nuts fine for a few weeks now won't eat those!! He is a tb so don't want any energy giving feed. He is currently a good weight so I don't want him to drop off either!!

Is the chaff used to mix minerals in? Otherwise if he doesnt need extra energy, and has good dentition, i’d give more quality hay/lage than bother with chaff feeds on their own.

Mine go off any ‘plain’ bowl feeds - do you give minerals/salt/ treats within the bowl feeds? I give bowl feeds to mix in their minerals, and they love a sprinkle of mixed herbs (i grow loads so have plenty to throw in), they love micronised linseed (good for omega 3 in winter), salt, chopped carrots/apple, rosehips, sprinkle of seaweed, brewers yeast (some love this others dont) - are all things that are nutritious too which ive added to enhance taste of plain bowl feeds with minerals , that otherwise they reluctantly pick through.
 
Mine likes Mollichaff Herbal, leaves the healthy or grass ones. Unless a horse has a serous problem with sugar a small handful adds so little to the overall diet it shouldn't be an issue.

Chaff is just really a tummy filler. He has ad lib hay which he eats up, salt and carrots. I've been looking at the oily herb thread which is really interesting. Micronised linseed did nothing for him so in an effort to save money I can't see the point in using it, same with pink mash.
 
I doubt not feeding the chaff will have much impact on his weight, and as you mentioned the oily herbs I must say my Arabi often will just stop eating his bucket feed, since feeding the oily herbs his eaten all of it straight away which he never used to do.

I feed it with a grass chaff the grass tastic or graze on with some unmolassed sugar beet and micronised linseed.

Dengie pure grass (I believe this is alfalfa free!)
And simple system also do a alfalfa free chaff

Pure Feeds have been bought out so are back trading, if that helps? Although with a couple of small tweaks it has to be said.

I'm subsequently still feeding Pure Easy which is fortunate as VeryFussyPony loves his Pure Easy.
 
Mine won't eat honeychop lite and healthy on it's own but if I add even a handful of fibre nuts and some water to turn it all to a mash she licks the bowl clean. Could you do something like that?
 
Have a similar issue. Fin gets nuttier than he already is on alfafa, so we can't have that. Hermosa gets sharp on linseed, and Fin won't touch it with a bargepole anyway, so can't have that, either. I have the Thunderbrooks grass chaff (I know!), but Hermosa clearly reads this forum and has decided she won't eat it. Neither horse is keen on any beet-related products.

They both laughed at me when I gave them Emerald Green grass nuts. No. F&*(ckin. Chance.

Fin will eat Dengie grass nuts, but Hermosa won't. Basically, if it's not filled with sugar and molasses, she's not that interested. But she is not allowed sugar and molasses because PREs are prone to EMS.

I'm using it to hide a Progressive Earth mineral supplement and oily herbs.

What's a grass chaff that tastes like it should be bad for you but isn't?
 
Another thought though not grass if you can get it, the Agrobs Grunhafer, green oat grass. It's the whole plant but before the grains sprout. Surprisingly tasty for something low in sugar starch. Mr fussy tb loves it.

Otherwise i come back to the dengie meadow grass with herbs.
