I am pleased to announce that Tattersalls will run. We will all welcome that with great relief and congratulate George Mernagh and his team on their determination to succeed.
The importance of this fixture to Irish eventing cannot be underestimated. I would equate the absence of Tattersalls to a crisis for Irish eventing and a situation demanding exceptional measures to be taken.
It is our showcase event and was rated 6th in the world last year. It is a World Cup qualifier and, without it, hundreds of Irish riders would have missed out on what, for many of them, is their only FEI outing. Crucially, without Tattersalls, there is no other Irish event scheduled where the Young Riders, Juniors and Ponies could qualify at home for their 2009 international team championships. Foreign travel to qualify is very difficult for children at school or college.
Since the time of my appointment last year I have had meetings with Tattersalls on the issues in running in 2008 and 2009. I met again with Tattersalls last week and saw the significant efforts they had made to considerably reduce the costs of running, whilst still putting forward a considerable amount of their own money, staff and equipment.
Eventing Ireland has had good financial results for 2008. I am delighted to say we found ourselves in the position of being able to give Tattersalls sponsorship of 20,000. This is an unusually strong financial position for us to find ourselves in, but I trust you will agree that this is money well spent and in the very best interests of Irish eventing.
Kind Regards
