Today I took my little yearling (Taz Monkey) to his first ever show I've been looking forward to it for a few weeks and finally the day came

He'd had a bath earlier in the week and I spent 2 hours yesterday getting his legs sparkly white and his tail tangle free. He'd had a little work done in the arena teaching him to trot up and a practice run out in the trailer earlier in the week too so was quite prepared for it.
We got there and he was cool as a cucumber, came off the trailer and munched hay whilst watching all the fuss and animals.
He waited for about 2 hours for his first class and then went in the indoor school (first time he's seen one!) was impeccably behaved and then went back to the trailer to wait for his next class. There were only three in our class and he came third-the judge said to me that his head was out of proportion to his body as he has a poor neck and shoulder and needs 'building up' and his back end needs built up and he needs some topline.

I'm chuffed to bits with how he's looking and appreciate that he will be slow to mature so am not worried about how he compares to his peers. His neck is massively improved in just 2 months and I think he has an ok bum on him!

He then went into the yearling horse class; I knew he was going to look like a weed in this class as he will only ever make a small horse but he's not a pony so that was all we could enter. (There was only a shetland in the pony class!)
So there were two of us in the horse class and the other entrant was enormous and very well conditioned, a really nice looking mare. And then us!
So again he did a really good show and was brilliantly behaved. Judge didn't say anymore about Taz other than that he was well behaved and that is was good for him to be out getting educated

So we had second in that class.
Few pics (aren't great sorry

) no jacket on as it was boiling hot and low-key/not exceptionally formal

Sorry for the essay just wanted to share as a few people have kindly helped me out from on here and either leant me stuff or patiently answered questions!

Well done, both of you; was wondering how you got on! He looks very smart - and sparkly clean!
If I'm honest, I wouldn't like any extra weight on him at this stage either; it really annoys me when judges want them looking like bullocks.
Bless him, he couldn't have been better behaved by the sound of it so if that was the point of the exercise then you've succeeded very well, I'd be very chuffed with him. Bet you'll both sleep tonight after such a stressful day too!
Have you any other shows lined up for this autumn?

Thanks all. I couldn't have asked for more. He was superb

Nothing else lined up for him Pat

I'm planning next year's diary already!

I agree, I think he looks perfect for his breeding and age (or am I biased

Well done, what a credit he is to your handling to be that laid back on his first outing

Or maybe a credit to your breeding! He is such a dude, just takes it all in his stride.

I'm just a little conscious of doing too much so hopefully he can be left now and do nothing all winter except eat and play

He was an end of April baby so a full 16 months now

And no idea how you missed that bit... I was only excited and going on about it since February! (when we bought him)

Ahhh so hence the name!

Well the name is because Taz is actually dark buckskin...believe it or not but he was actually born the colour of his mummy then when really dark when he moulted

he looks fab, and what lovely breeding, really interesting mix but with lovely lines on both sides! Cant wait to see how he turns out when a bit older, and totally agree with above, looks spot on weight wise for me!
