TB Conformation?

How old was she in that photo? She looks very short backed like a youngster that hasn't finished growing.

Does she always stand with her hind hooves slightly forwards like that? If she does, then she is slightly sickle hocked.

Do you have any other good photos of her? I can't quite see her hooves clearly, but the NF looks quite upright/boxy in that photo.

Long cannons on the front legs and built slightly downhill (but if she is still growing that could improve). Shoulder is a bit upright.

However all of this matters not a jot, if she's sound, safe and you love her. :)

Thanks for your reply. :) She is short backed, only just fits at 17" saddle when the fitter came. She is 4 so still evening out etc hopefully! I'm not sure if she usally stands like that to be honest, I have some more photos but none are on a flat surface. One of her front feet does grow weird, this was after she had just been shod so not as noticeable.

I'll find some more pics! :)

Her spine wont finish growing until she is 5 1/2 minimum, so there is some hope, although the last few months of growing will be her neck rather than her back.

Aw, she's sweet. Yes, she is badly put together. She has sickle hocks, upright shoulder, long cannon bones, low set on neck. However, she has a lovely length from rump to hock, and actually sickle hocks can give rise to lovely movement and excellent jumping ability. But they are prone to hock problems due to the extra forces being loaded through the joint. She is very short in the back too. Watch out for kissing spine, but if she hasn't got KS then her back is probably very strong. You need to be careful with saddle fit though as she may not be able to take much more than a 16.5 inch. She has a nice depth of girth and so plenty of heart and lung room. She is probably very high in stamina.

Tying a horse up like what ?
I can't see from the photo how it's tied up

One pic to take a pic I clipped the leadrope to her noseband while i took a photo. I removed it as i cant be bothered with comments about it, it was only for a second! Theres a bit on the micklem specifically for this on the noseband anyway! :p

Thank you :) When we got a saddle fitter, she fitted a t6 17" as they didnt go any smaller and that was the best fit but she said we can just about get away with it! I havent jumped her much, but her old owner won a few sj with her! Also youre right about her stamina, we went on a 5 hour hack and she was storming her way back to get home. :p

Well she sounds like a real gem. She reminds me of a little TB mare I had OLWVTB. She moved like a dream. Massive floaty paces and scope to burn. I wanted to buy her but her owner suddenly put the price up (after we'd agreed a price when I took her on) because I'd improved her. I could have afforded her but was so annoyed I sent her back. She went on to event to intermediate level. She had all the conformational faults your girl has.

That's made me feel better about her faults! But i originally bought her as my other horse is bad in traffic, she passes wagons/tractors etc and is very well behaved but she's schooling and jumping well to, so am using her more than my other one now. But I now know why she was only £950!! Thank you for your help, it was interesting finding out about her conformation as I don't know much about it. :)

At the end of the day these TB's are never going to have what we would consider perfect confirmation, they were bred to be quick and that means a different confirmation is needed than say a showjumper, dressage horse etc. Some of the best horses in the world have suspect confirmation so dont worry to much :)
Can i be very cheeky and share a photo of my TB...vets, farrier and horsey friends all tell me he is nicely put together but Im sure there will be people who will find 'faults', he cost £800 straight from the trainer.

Hi I like your TB :) I was just googling some of the faults and lots of threads about racehorses came up like you say. Mine was bred for racing so it makes sense that she has some of the faults I guess.

Exactly and remeber your horsey still has some maturing to do...cant be that bad if you can both manage such long hacks! Have you thought about endurance...that is what we are aiming at, he will just keep going all day!

Hey you know what some of the best horses didnt have great conformation, Sea Biscuit being one of them. Good attitude and willingness to learn are really important, and just as long as they dont have any real clangers conformationally which compromise soundness for what you want to do then just get on and have a great time.

If you want to learn a little more about conformation, i'm sure some of the good HHO folk can point you in the direction of some good books. Me i get Practical Horsemen delivered and it has an article each month showing three horses and you have to put them in order conformationally for what the owner wants them to do, and then on the next page the professional gives their opinion...love that section.

Not the worst confo I have seen on a tb by a long shot! If she does her job and is fit for purpose then there is no problem - just don't expect to win many showing classes lol!

I have 1 very well made tb who is now technically lame due to injury - in all honesty he would have been a top class Show Hack but alas that wams not his career at the time. I have another who has very good confo but has a jumpers rump. Another who is quite flat from wither to dock but is otherwise fairly good. And the last one is quite upright in his legs and shoulders. He floats across the ground surprisingly well and is stunningly pretty which tends to make judges blind to the legs - apart from their supermodel length lol!

I have! There is a few near me, when I am able to buy some transport I will definitely start. After a naught sec d I have been swayed by TBs! :)

Thanks I will take a look at some things like that. :)

Haha thank you, luckily I don't think I fancy showing anytime soon! :p Just googled her dad, Prince Daniel, and it says he has good conformation so she must have taken a bit from him! http://swallowsoaststud.com/PRINCEDANIEL.html
